Saturday Garbage Plate: we can has pizzas?

October 23rd, 2010 1:24 pm by Kelly

funny pictures of dogs with captions

Her head resting atop a pile of red cardboard takeout boxes, a doe-eyed dog gazes upward, presumably at the pizza delivery person or other Human in Charge. The lol caption reads, “ai jus wants to smell it a little.” Such a fibber, that one!

#vegan #noms on the twitters this week:

Also, have voted in Pizza Express’s Create Your Pizza Challenge yet? No? Well, what are you waiting for? Give the Pizza Levantina some electoral love, pretty please with Daiya on top?: www.pizzaexpress.com/create-your-pizza/vote/

And let’s close things out with a super-adorable song from Sesame Street: “I Love My Hair,” which encourages young girls of color to love their hair, as is, without the use of chemicals, dyes, straight irons, and other miscellaneous “beauty” aids (read: torture devices). You can read an interview with songwriter Joey Mazzarino, who wrote the song for his young daughter, at the Huffington Post.

For those who cannot view the video, here are the lyrics (via Clutch Magazine):

Don’t need a trip to the beauty shop,
’cause I love what I got on top.
It’s curly and it’s brown and it’s right up there!
You know what I love? That’s right, my hair!
I really love my hair.
I love my hair. I love my hair.
There’s nothing else that can compare with my hair.
I love my hair, so I must declare:
I really, really, really love my hair.
Wear a clippy or in a bow
Or let it sit in an afro
My hair looks good in a cornrow
It does so many things you know, that’s why I let it grow
I love my hair, I love my hair
I love it and I have to share
I love my hair, I love my hair!
I want to make the world aware I love my hair.
I wear it up. I wear down. I wear it twisted all around.
I wear braids and pigtails too.
I love all the things my hair can do.
In barrettes or flying free, ever perfect tresses you’ll see
My hair is part of me, an awesome part of me
I really love my hair!

Miss O-Ren Ishii, a tiny lil’ rat/fox terrier mix whom we adopted from Animal Haven
(keep reading for the significance!) 5 1/2 years ago.
Much like her namesake, she is awesome and kick-ass.

Welcome to yet another Saturday Garbage Plate, peoples! I hope you’re enjoying the beautiful autumn weather. Today’s forecasted high in Kansas City is 79, so as soon as I finish this here link roundup, I’m moving my office outside, to the patio. At least I’ll get some much-needed Vitamin D whilst working my weekend away, eh?

Topics run the gamut, from recipes to photo essays to contests and giveaways.

Last year, over 500 individual blogs participated, yours truly included. In fact, this will be my third year VeganMoFo-ing; have a little looksee at my past contributions here and, if you dig it, rejoin me on November 1st, wont you please?

If you’d like to learn more about VeganMoFo, here are some links to get you started:

  • Unfortunately, I’ve been so busy prepping for VeganMoFo this week that I don’t have any other links to share! (*sad panda*) Instead, here’s another cute canine vid that’s guaranteed to make you laugh-sob. And Capt. Andrew Schmidt’s updates, doubly so.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go love on my five rescued dog friends. Until next week!

Several times a year, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) – an advocacy group comprised of medical professionals and laypeople, “working together for compassionate and effective medical practice, research, and health promotion” – holds a 21-Day Vegan Kickstart challenge. The program provides participants – omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike – with tips, tools, and information to help them transition to a vegan diet, whether for three weeks or (hopefully) a lifetime. Newbie and old school vegans alike can also benefit from the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart, which provides plenty of inspiration and support to help to remix a tired routine.

Although this isn’t to suggest that a vegan diet is necessarily one of deprivation and boredom. Quite the opposite, in fact – a point which is underscored by the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart itinerary:

Whether you’re drawn to chocolate, cookies, potato chips, cheese, or burgers and fries, we all have foods we can’t seem to resist—foods that sabotage our best efforts to lose weight and improve our health. But PCRM’s Vegan Kickstart will help you win the food fight.

Based on research by Neal Barnard, M.D., PCRM president and one of America’s leading health advocates, this 21-day program is designed for anyone who wants to explore and experience the health benefits of a vegan diet.

During these three weeks you will have an all-access pass to:

* Daily e-tips that will put you on the path to weight loss, better health, and greater well-being
* A delicious, easy, and satisfying recipe sent every day that will help you break your cravings for unhealthy foods
* Weekly motivational nutrition webcasts featuring Dr. Barnard
* Social support of other Kickstart participants through the Kickstart message board where nutrition professionals answer your health and diet questions

Additional tools include meal plans, restaurant guides, daily nutritional quizzes, and celebrity phone calls.

You can learn more about the challenge and register as a participant at www.21daykickstart.org. (Or, you know, just watch the 83-second video intro, embedded below!) Some of the static features, including an archive of past recipes, is available online year-round – so don’t be afraid to challenge yourself any time throughout the year.
