Vegan pizza slices

Vegan pizza slices: The dough recipe I used is from Vegan with a Vengeance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Highly recommend! Vegan pizza with kalamata olives, cipollini onion, parsley and tomato.

Another week, another seven delicious vegan pizza recipes. I hope you’re bookmarking these for Vegan Pizza Day, people! (Seriously, those pies won’t make themselves…)

Contests!: Vegan Backpacker has three boxes of Primal Strips vegan jerky up for grabs; SporkOnline is giving away free online cooking classes to eleven lucky winners; FaveDiets is offering up two prize packages of MATCH vegan meats; and Tofurky is hosting the coolest contest EVER. Some of these giveaways end as early as tomorrow, so enter to win today!

vegan craigslist missed connections: now inspired by teese cheese! Forget the Washington Post; when vegan pizza pops up in the classified ads, then and only then do you know that veganism has gone mainstream, baby!

Spay & Neuter Kansas City needs some extra helping hands! Check out SNKC’s latest list of volunteer opportunities here and, to get an idea of what they’re up to, see their weekly recap here. They spayed and neutered 97 dogs and cats and distributed 262 lbs. of pet food this week. Very awesome, guys and gals!

Next Thursday, January 20th, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) of Kansas City will be holding its monthly “Third Thursday Social.” Stop by at 5:30 PM and learn what you can do to help influence legislation for the better!:

Hamburger Mary’s
101 Southwest Blvd.
Kansas City, MO 64108

(ETA: The menu looks painfully short on cruelty-free options, so vegans may want to call ahead.)

Also next week: on Friday, January 21st, Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri (PPKM) will be holding a rally in Columbia, MO in celebration of the 38th Anniversary of Roe v Wade. Here are the details:

You have seen the protesters outside Planned Parenthood intimidating and harassing women for months; now it is time to show that mid-Missouri supports PP!

Please join us on Friday, January 21st from 11:30-1:00 as we celebrate the 38th Anniversary of Roe v Wade by showing support for Planned Parenthood.

What: Stand up for Planned Parenthood Street Visibility
When: Friday, January 21 from 11:30 – 1:00
Where: In front of Planned Parenthood in Columbia (711 N. Providence)

We will have plenty of signs but feel free to bring your own.

For more information or to RSVP please contact Michelle at 573-424-8717 or michelle.trupiano [at]

Since we’re dishing about all things local this week, why not end with a video about veganism in Kansas City? VegNews correspondent The Healthy Voyager – intrepid as she is – visited the so-called Steak Capital of the world last summer in order to explore KC’s vegan options (surprising as they are in number).

Check it:

Featured eateries include McCoy’s Public House; Waldo Pizza; blanc burgers + bottles; The Drop: Bar and Bistro; and the blue bird bistro.

What, no Eden Alley? Omitting Cafe Seed and FÜD can be forgiven, I guess, since they’re relatively new. And Garden of Eatin’ is way off the beaten path. (Namely, St. Joseph, MO – up by the PPP, yo!)

But Eden Alley? Inexcusable! Best vegan buttercream cake ever!

Stuffed Pizza Slice

A slice of pizza pie, oozing-to-overflowing with White Sauce, broccoli, sliced onions,
black olives, TVP, sliced herbed tomatoes and shredded rice Mozzarella. Yum!

Stuffed crusts, pizza muffins and vegan Stromboli, oh my! Make sure your bib is tucked in, all nice and snug-like – here’s this week in #nom!

Do you receive SNKC’s weekly newsletters? No? That’s okay, ’cause I do, and am happy to share! Spay & Neuter Kansas City now sends out a weekly update of its activities and accomplishments, as well as its current volunteer opportunities. Here’s a link to the most recent edition. I’ll include these in each week’s roundup, at least for as long as I remember to. Give me a friendly poke or holler if I forget, okay? Between its spay and neuter assistance and “pet” food pantry, SNKC does great work. Help them out if you can – pretty please with Daiya on top?

Over at Vegan Planet, Robin Robertson is giving away a copy of her latest book, Party Vegan, to one lucky reader. The deadline to enter is January 12, so don’t delay!

Hungry Vegan is also hosting a giveaway – enter this week to win a copy of Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Appetite for Reduction. Pssst! There will be onion rings! Just sayin’…

Vegan Pizza Day is coming! Are you ready?

To get y’all in the mood – as if any help is needed in this department! as. if! – here’s Eco-Vegan Gal’s review of Pizza Fusion, one of the astounding 99 (that’s NINETY NINE, as in one less than ONE HUNDRED!) Californian vegan and/or vegan-friendly pizza places included in Vegan Pizza Day’s list.

Just for comparison: Missouri has four. FOUR! In just two cities! Kansas? ZERO. Bleh.

Midwest vegans, we have seriously got to up our game. I am embarrassed for us. SERIOUSLY.

* Post title shameless borrowed from Vegan On A Mission. I gets a giggle every time I see it!

Saturday Garbage Plate: Happy New Year!

happy new year

Happy VEGAN New Year! (Hey, the cake’s from Vegan with a Vengeance!)
CC image via Flickr user gregvanbrug.

Happy New Year, y’all! Now that the holidays are over, we’ll be returning to our regularly scheduled pizza tweets. That’s right: all pizza, all the time. Well, most of the time. Even I need a break from Daiya and red sauce. Follow us on Twitter for real-time nom, kay?

If you’re not already, resolve to go vegan in 2011! Pledge to live this year with compassion: for your your body, your health, and your conscience; for earth and its inhabitants; and, most of all, for the billions of animals we objectify, exploit and slaughter each and every year.

Not sure where to start? PCRM can help! Sign up for their 21-Day Vegan Kickstart so you can access shopping lists, meal plans, nutritional videos, and other tools and support to help you on your vegan journey. The next session begins Monday, January 3rd so don’t delay!

Need some inspiration? Check out this video of Ellen DeGeneres baking a vegan pizza with chef Wolfgang Puck:

While this pizza is free of cheese, vegans need not live a life devoid of the oozy, gooey stuff: there are a plethora of yummy, melty vegan cheeses on the market, including Daiya, Vegan Gourmet by Follow Your Heart and Teese. To help you out, we’ve even compiled a list of vegan cheeses (and meats!), available on our link love page.

2010-12-13 - Pumpkin Pie Dog Biscuits - 0004

Pumpkin Pie Dog Biscuits, in progress. (Hint: The recipe is Tuesday’s daily nom!)

Once again, a week’s worth of nomness:

and, in other news:

The Senate just voted to repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell! Awesome news, though (and leave it to me to play the pessimist) it comes 15+ years late.

More happy shiny news: Chicago Soydairy now makes vegan mozzarella sticks with Teese cheese! Vegan Essentials is currently out of stock, but. If you simply cannot wait for them to become available, you can always make your own! (I’m thinking about adding this to my criFSMas menu, which consists mainly of lasagna assembled the day beforehand. I should be able to handle it, don’t you think? I have gotten crafty, yo!)

I usually try not to link to PETA, but the latest edition of its Prime newsletter featured three must-read holiday-themed pieces:

Smart Santas Don’t Give Animals as Gifts – Please don’t gift animals, friends; and especially, don’t spring them on surprised recipients. Nonhuman animals aren’t disposable objects to be bought, sold, returned, upgraded, thrown out, and/or recycled – which is what oftentimes happens to holiday gifts.

Make the Holidays Safer for Your Animals – Dr. Barry Kipperman offers advice on traveling with our without your nonhuman friends, as well as keeping them safe around all the holiday baubles and foodstuffs that many of us humans take for granted.

Remembering Animal Shelters at the Holidays – “Those who care for animals at our community animal shelters are often taken for granted. Working under the most stressful conditions, these unsung heroes deserve our special thanks, and the holiday season can be an ideal time to show our appreciation.”

On that note, I’ll leave you with “Shelter Humor,” a video that’s perfect save for the unfortunate use of the r-word toward the end.

2010-01-04 - Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream - 0004

My own homemade, vegan pumpkin spice ice cream.

Christmas Manger Vegan Silent Night
A lovely video which explores the role of nonhuman animals in the events
of the upcoming “holy night.”
