Find-a-Friend Friday: Peaches (Also: Wayside Waifs’s “All I Want For Christmas Is YOU!” Adoption Event!)

Meet Peaches, y’all! Isn’t she adorable? She and another little cutie, Marmalade, were rescued from a hoarding situation after the death of their person. Both kittens need a new home to call their own. Hopefully some kickass human will adopt them both. (In time for Christmas! And shower them with gifts come December 25th! And love and hug and cuddle them forever!)

Here’s what SNKC has to say about Peaches:

Domestic Short Hair: An adoptable cat in Kansas City, MO
Small • Young • Female

Peaches is in foster care and rescued from a horrible hoarding situation. There were over 30+ cats rescued from this situation and had been left in a trailer for weeks after their owner passed away. Peaches is one of the cuddliest cats I have ever met. She loves to rub and be stroked. She will lay with you and sit with you. She liked to follow us from room to room. She is less than a year old and likely to be a small cat when full-grown. She gets along well with other cats and small dogs, probably any dog, but all we have are small ones. She has not bothered plants in the house and uses the litter box well. If you are interested in adopting Marmalade please email

Spay & Neuter Kansas City is an awesome group that provides low-cost spay & neuter and vaccination services in the KC area. The also provide education and outreach services, run low-cost dog training classes, maintain a “pet” food pantry, and help find homes for animals in need. Currently they’re in need of in-kind donations (such as dog and cat food, hay, litter boxes, dog houses, and cleaning products), as well as donations of money (or perhaps services?) to repair their outreach truck. Every little bit helps!

You should also know that Wayside Waifs is holding a special “All I Want For Christmas Is YOU!” Adoption Event this Saturday, December 3rd (that’s tomorrow, folks!) from 10AM to 6PM. Stop by and meet the 300+ plus nonhumans who need a kind-hearted soul (that’s you) to bring them in from the cold this holiday season.

All adoptions are just $25! Second chances, is there any gift greater?

Find-a-Friend Friday: Garak (Also: This weekend’s Adopt-a-Thon & June is for Cats!)

Hey lovely people! Did y’all know that June is Adopt-a-Shelter Cat Month? Neither did I, which is why I spent the last two Fridays featuring ferrets and rabbits instead of kittens and cats. Ignorance, I plead it! Anyway, for the rest of the month – i.e., the next two weeks – we’re all about the felines. Be cool and spread the word – or better yet, adopt a feline friend, mkay? Please and thank you!

This week’s Friend is Garak, a timid but sweet little guy who’s currently staying with a foster person from True Treasures Rescue in Belton, MO:

Tiger/Oriental Short Hair Mix: An adoptable cat in Belton, MO
Medium • Adult • Male

Garak is a very special boy who finds the world a very scarey place. He is very timid and nervous with people he does not know and has been known to hide for long periods of time when in new places or around people he does not know. Having said that, Garak is also one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever known. He is extremely gentle and good natured. He loves lap time, being comed, and having his cheeks rubbed. Garak is blessed with very soft, fine bunny-fur. Anyone interested in Garak will need to understand that this is a cat that will never adjust to a busy, noisy household. He will not come out to meet you if you want to visit him until you have been in his foster home many times, and even then he will be very nervous. I’ve known Garak since he was an 8 week old kitten trapped in a feral (wild cat) colony. He was thin and frightened but also wililng to learn to trust. I did not understand at that time that he was bonding and that it will take a very special person with a lot of patience to help him make new bonds with a new person. Garak would like to find his own person so that he can always be the center of attention and never have to share lap time or cuddle time. If Garak never finds that special person, he will stay with his foster mom for his natural life. Please CLICK HERE to fill out an adoption application. One of our volunteers will get back to you within 24 hours.

Also, you should totes know that Wayside Waifs is holding an Adopt-a-Thon today through Sunday. Stop by for half-priced “pets” and go home with a new BFF. They’ll have over 300 animals available for adoption, some of them rescued from the storm stricken areas of Joplin, MO, Reading, KS and Caruthersville, MO.

Still unconvinced? Perhaps this super-sentimental montage will change your mind!

Saturday Garbage Plate: By the Power of Pizza!

Puffy Pizza Power!

So yeah, I’ve been kind of lax in posting these link roundups lately. By which I mean I skipped two weeks straight ’cause I had other stuff to do. (Like make pizza, duh!) In my defense, it’s Saturday! You can hardly blame a girl. I promise to be better, or at least try. And for breaking vegan and/or pizza-related news, you can always follow us on twitter @theppp! (Do it!)

Contests and giveaways! So Delicious is still going strong with its 100 Days of Change Giveaway. Today’s prize? A sterling silver Kate Spade picture frame – perfect for showing off that kickass pie you made last week. Enter to win on their FB page. Elsewhere on the interwebs – and in honor of World Fair Trade Day (that’s today!) – Luna & Larry’s is giving away one Coconut Bliss gift basket.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City is having a rough week, y’all. First Jackson County decided to cut the org’s funding, and then several air conditioning units were stolen right off the roof of the shelter! If you can, please consider donating your time, money or goods. Also download and share its Spring 2011 newsletter “The Scoop” to help spread the word about all the great work SNKC’s doing!

This week at Animal Haven: Baxter’s Boutique is open for business; read about young volunteer Beth Gasser, who donated a gift basket to the shelter as part of her Bat Mitzvah celebration; and meet (read: adopt!) Shilo and Achilles!

Get high – on life, on carbs, whatever – and watch this video. It’s weird and scary and I die a little inside every time I see it, and yet I cannot turn away.

Saturday Garbage Plate: The Only To Do List That Matters!

April 16th, 2011 5:47 pm by Kelly

2011-04-12 - Pizza To-Do List 01

Make pizza, photograph pizza, eat pizza, blog pizza, repeat. (THE STORY OF MY LIFE, YO!) Sunday through Saturday, we’ve got a recipe to inspire you. Put these pies on your to do list and eat ’em!

Contests & recipes! Mercy for Animals has a free copy of Kathy Freston’s Veganist up for grabs; Experience Life has a dozen copies of Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Diet; and you can snag a Mediterranean Bread Dipping Set at The Hungry Vegan. Finally, as part of its Vegan Bucket List giveaway series, VegNews is offering up one-year membership to Spork Online to a lucky reader.

Speaking of (ahem!) VegNews, perhaps you’ve heard about the latest controversy to rock the vegan community? This week the vegan blog QuarryGirl revealed that VegNews routinely uses stock photos in both its magazine and on its website – including photos of dishes containing dairy, eggs and meat, sometimes doctored to appear vegan. (In the most egregious example, animal bones were Photoshopped out of a photo of BBQ ribs.) Understandably, many vegans and/or foodies are pissed and offended, myself included; if I hadn’t already decided to let my subscription lapse, this kerfuffle – and VegNews’ lackluster response – might have led me to cancel it. But since I only have one issue left, the point is kind of moot.

Anyhow, I won’t get into it further – mostly because everything I have to say has already been said (and in LOL cat form, to boot) – but. I would like to take the opportunity to point you to this wonderful piece by Katrina Fox of The Scavenger: VegNews controversy offers creative opportunities, with a special emphasis on the suggestions for positive change.

So, to people who create vegan dishes or eat out at vegan restaurants: Take photos of vegan dishes, upload them to Flickr, drop an email to VegNews and other vegan publications offering your photos.

To photographers (vegan or otherwise): Ditto above.

To VegNews editors (and other vegan magazines): Post information on your website about specs for photographs: what you need to be able to include a good photograph of print quality. Put a callout to your readers, to photographers (vegan or otherwise) to take pics of vegan food.

Vegans are fantastic at galvanising into action. So, let’s flood Flickr with images of delicious vegan food.

Let’s make sure that vegan publications no longer need to use stock images of meat, dairy and egg dishes.

Let’s take this unfortunate incident and turn it into an opportunity that will benefit everyone – most of all the animals we seek to protect from suffering.

How about it, vegans? If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s food! Making food, eating food, discussing food, fantasizing about food. AND TAKING AND SHARING PICTURES OF IT ALL! Hey, I’ll start! Here’s my food (not-)porn collection on Flickr, with a set each dedicated to human food, dog food, and – the most important food group of them all – PIZZA! Yum, I’m getting hungry just typing about it. (What did I say about us vegans, hmmmm?)

2011-02-26 - Potato Pizza FTW! - 0012

I showed you mine, now you show me yours!

Need another tumblog to follow? (Probably not, but roll with me here.) Pizza in the movies FTW!

Spay & Neuter Kansas City sterilized 106 dogs and cats this week and distributed 810 pounds of dog and cat food through its community food pantry. Check out SNKC’s weekly recap for more, including an update on Queenie and instructions for those wishing to donate money or volunteer their time to help the companion animals of Kansas City!

Dooley, Libby and Suzie Loo are this week’s Waifs of the Week! Visit Wayside Waifs to see all the lovely nonhumans who are waiting to meet you RIGHT NOW!

Hey, pro-choice Missouri! NARAL is holding a lobby day in Jefferson City on Tuesday, May 3. Here are the deets:

Last week, your Missouri House spent hours debating and passing HB28, which allows any pharmacy to refuse to sell emergency contraception. It also places new restrictions on medical abortion – as if we didn’t have enough already!

Contrary to all reason and scientific evidence, the House declared that emergency contraception causes abortion, and therefore, pharmacies can refuse to provide this type of birth control if they don’t want to. Clearly, the Missouri House has little respect for women. They have decided that women can’t think for themselves and that endangering women’s health is OK in the service of “pro-life” politics.

Seriously, could they be any more offensive?

This is your last chance to tell lawmakers in person that they have it all wrong. We need your voice in Jefferson City on Tuesday, May 3. Your representatives need to know that women can and do think for themselves, that pharmacists should dispense prescriptions, not moral judgments, and that women’s health is more important than political posturing.

Will you please join us, along with our coalition partners Planned Parenthood and Faith Aloud, for our final lobby day of the year?

What: NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Lobby Day
When: Tuesday, May 3 from 10:00 – 2:30p.m.
Where: Missouri Capitol, Jefferson City, MO
(Free bus available from St. Louis!)

Please RSVP as soon as possible! Give us a call (314.531.8616) or send us an email at

Psst: We need Lobby Team Leaders too! Let us know if you’re interested!
