As always, this week’s roundup of nomz, via the twitternets:

Contests and giveaways! Leslie Loves Veggies has six jars of Food for Lovers Vegan Queso for three lucky winners; over at The Dirty Vegan, there’s a Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss prize pack up for grabs; and you can enter to win a Tasty Bite Meal Kit from The Vegan Backpacker. That last contest ends today, so don’t dawdle, mkay?

Spay and Neuter Kansas City is in need of “laundry soap, bleach, newspaper & cardboard flats for litter boxes! Newspaper & flats on the top of the list as these cannot be bought. If you or anyone you know (neighbors) has a newspaper subscription with old papers stacking up, we could really use them! Thanks in advance!” Additionally, they’re in need of an experienced foster home for a new mother and here pups. Finally, you can read up on this week’s volunteer opportunities here.

2011-02-14 - Rennie Princess - 0002

Yesterday was our little Rennie’s birthday/adoption day anniversary! Go tweet her some love, won’t you?

The Natural Products Expo West is happening in Anaheim this weekend and, for those of us not lucky enough to live in Cali, quarrygirl has a massive roundup of her favorite products, including tweets from Chicago Soydairy (like peeps, but vegan!); mozzarella sticks made with Teese cheese (also vegan!); the new pepperjack-flavored Daiya cheese; and some soy pepperoni crumbles from el burrito – to name just a few. Cue: tummy rumbles.

Brought to you from the folks behind Vegan Backpacker, Vegan Cuts is a cool new service that delivers deals on coupons on vegan products and services to your inbox weekly. Convenient, right? So what are you waiting for? Sign up here!

Finally, I’d hoped to have a list of resources available to those who’d like to donate to relief efforts in Japan; unfortunately, I haven’t yet found the time to research and compile a list. Instead, check out this guide to giving from charity watchdog Charity Navigator – and please think twice about giving to the American Red Cross, which has a history of misusing emergency funds, conducts vivisection, and discriminates against GLBTQ folks. Food for Life Global is a personal favorite, but it’s not yet clear whether they’re providing relief to the quake and tsunami survivors in Japan.

Saturday Garbage Plate: Ain’t No Party Like a Scranton Party*

Happy THREE DAY WEEKEND, peeps! This totally calls for a VEGAN PIZZA PARTY! (But then, doesn’t everything, hmmmm?)

Shane and I are gonna try experimenting with a potato pizza this weekend. (Ew, pervert, not like that.) How ’bout you?

Contests & giveaways! vegansaurus! is giving away one copy of The Happy Herbivore Cookbook; just leave a comment on the blog to win. Also, like Paw Prints: The Magazine’s FB page by 2/27/11 and you’ll be entered tp win a Magellan RoadMate 3065 GPS system.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City spayed and neutered 129 dogs and cats and provided over $1,950 in spay neuter subsidy assistance this week alone. Way to go, guys and gals!

10 things everyone should know about vegans. Bullet point numero uno: we rock.

On that note, I have an uber-important announcement: I HAVE OFFICIALLY MASTERED THE ART OF THE VEGAN TWINKIE!

2011-02-15 - Twinkies! - 0004\

And so can you – just follow this recipe from Shmooed Food! It’s easy, yo! And delicious. Soooooo delicious….

Tip: for extra creamy goodness, ram a chopstick completely through the Twinkie before injecting the cream; this will allow for maximum fill. Sideways (at three points) is easier than lengthwise, especially if you’re working with a blunt instrument.

If yer doin’ it rite, you should be able to see the top of the Twinkie puff up with cream. If you’re especially lucky, some cream will even make it all the way through and spurt out the other side. It’s like a volcano of yum, y’all!

That’s all I have to report this week, folks. What’s going on in your corner of the interwebs?

* I was gonna do a play on this phrase – involving vegan pizza, natch – but once I remembered The Office’s remix, I couldn’t get it out of my head. And now by the transitive properties of YouTube, I shall curse you similarly. Muahahahaha!

Saturday Garbage Plate: Superbowl Sunday, i.e., Vegan Pizza Day #2

February 5th, 2011 12:07 pm by Kelly

016/365 2011 - Dinner @ WKDU

xjohnpaulx

Forget buffalo wings and seven-layer dips! (Unless they’re vegan, yo!) This Superbowl Sunday, why not revisit Vegan Pizza Day by whipping up one of these delicious, cruelty-free pies? Slap some Daiya on top, and the otherwise occupied omnivores aren’t even likely to notice. That sound? I do believe it’s a two-point conversion for Team Vegan. (Yeah, I googled that term. What of it?) Nom!

Contests! Here’s a sampling of the vegan swag you could win this week: Alicia Silverstone is giving away a complete set of her 2010 ecoTOOLS collection; vegansaurus! has a copy of The Complete Guide to Vegan Food Substitutions up for grabs; and last but not least, upload a photo of your furkid to Leaping Bunny’s Facebook wall, and you could win a gift bag from Badger Balm.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s weekly recap is up! Also, SNKC is trying to raise funds for Diamond, a sweet girl who suffered an injury when her leg became tangled in a tie-out. Her people can’t afford the cost of treatment, and she may need to have the leg amputated. Remember, don’t tether your dogs outside unsupervised or for long periods of time, and definitely don’t leave them outside at all in this cold, snowy weather! (SNKC reports that it will be working with Diamond’s owners to find alternatives to chaining going forward.)

Hey hey, it’s World Nutella Day! Celebrate by buying a vegan version or making your own. All of the chocolatey goodness, none of the rape and baby murder!

On that note, let’s part ways with this heartwarming video from Farm Sanctuary. Blitzen, Lawrence and Alexander’s Welcome Home tells the story of three male dairy calves rescued from a stockyard in New York. The three babies were sickly and required medical care at Cornell University before they could be relocated to Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter (which I will visit one day, I swear!).

Saturday Garbage Plate: VEGAN PIZZA DAY IS NOW!

Daiya vegan cheese pizza!

Gooey, stretchy, cheesy, oozey, melty VEGAN PIZZA! with Daiya cheese, red sauce
and a gluten-free organic cornmeal crust. Praise be!, indeed.

Oh yay, Vegan Pizza Day is finally here! For dinner, I shall be swimming in a pool of liquid Daiya and pizza sauce; until then, all I have are my fantasies – inspired, in no small part, by this week’s nom roundup. Ditto: my Flickr favorites, which is stuffed so full of vegan pizza photos that I’m starting to look like I have a sexual fetish or something. (Cue: images of me poking a hot, saucy pizza à la America Pie, whilst moaning in simultaneous fits of pain and pleasure.)

Um, yeah, I’ll stop talking now. You’re welcome.

Whether on Facebook, Twitter or in the “real world,” you can join in the day’s vegan pizza festivities in a number of ways:

– Go to VeganPizzaDay.com for a list of events, participating eateries, news coverage and the like;

– Follow @VeganPizzaDay on twitter to stay up-to-date on the day’s vegan pizza offerings around the U.S.;

– Share your vegan pizza not-porn on Facebook and tag Vegan Pizza Day so all can see;

– And while you’re at it, “like” Vegan Pizza Day on FB!

I’ll also be tweeting coverage of Vegan Pizza Day @ThePPP and will share my own photos after dinner – assuming, of course, I’m able to pull myself out of the inevitable carb coma long enough do so. Wish me luck, peeps!

Now on to this week’s contests and giveaways! PETA has one gorgeous, cozy, wool-free Vaute Couture coat up for grabs; Lightlife is giving away prize packages to three lucky readers at Leslie Loves Veggies; Vegetarian Star has two coupons good for free Gardein products; C’est La Vegan is giving away a jar of Vegan Queso (yum!); and you can win a Crazy Sexy Diet gift package, courtesy of VegNews. Methinks I’ll regret telling you about the Vaute Couture giveaway. I WANT THAT COAT!

Elsewhere on the internets:

We found a kitty on our doorstep last week! No, for reals!

2011-01-19 - Lemmy - 0017

Lemmy the New Kitteh. His little kitteh balls look like plush pom poms.
I could make a flying spaghetti monster on his bum, y’all!
(CAN and WILL! buahahahaha!)

In celebration of The Gentle Barn’s first year on Facebook, a generous supporter will donate $1 for every fan who “likes” The Gentle Barn – but only if they reach 100,000 fans by March 1st! If you’re on Facebook, please “like” The Gentle Barn and spread the word!

The anti-tethering group Dogs Deserve Better (DDB) needs volunteers to help make its 9th annual Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week a success. The campaign, which takes place the week of Valentine’s Day, involves sending hand-crafted Valentine’s cards, brochures and coupons for dog supplies to the owners of chained dogs, in order to raise awareness for chained and penned dogs – with the ultimate goal of bringing them indoors. You can help by making cards, donating coupons, and submitting the addresses of chained dogs.

Help In Defense of Animals (IDA) help the nonhuman victims of the recent floods in Australia and Brazil. Donate to its disaster relief fund and share these heartbreaking images with your friends, family and social networks.

As always (okay, three weeks and counting!), check out Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s volunteer opportunities and weekly recap. (Which doesn’t seem to be available yet, but I’ll update this post with a link when it is!)

Finally, for Vegan Pizza Day (not really!) the lovely Tracye McQuirter of By Any Greens Necessary shows how to make a delicious vegan pizza, topped with tons of veggies and nutritional yeast:

I’m not a “nooch” girl myself – you either love nutritional yeast or you don’t – but I am totally in love with her kitchen! So modern and matchy! Me, I have yellow ’70s laminate countertops. I could never shoot a cooking video in my own kitchen, even if I wanted to. Yuck!

Saturday Garbage Plate: Looking for love and Teese!

Vegan pizza slices

Vegan pizza slices: The dough recipe I used is from Vegan with a Vengeance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Highly recommend! Vegan pizza with kalamata olives, cipollini onion, parsley and tomato.

Another week, another seven delicious vegan pizza recipes. I hope you’re bookmarking these for Vegan Pizza Day, people! (Seriously, those pies won’t make themselves…)

Contests!: Vegan Backpacker has three boxes of Primal Strips vegan jerky up for grabs; SporkOnline is giving away free online cooking classes to eleven lucky winners; FaveDiets is offering up two prize packages of MATCH vegan meats; and Tofurky is hosting the coolest contest EVER. Some of these giveaways end as early as tomorrow, so enter to win today!

vegan craigslist missed connections: now inspired by teese cheese! Forget the Washington Post; when vegan pizza pops up in the classified ads, then and only then do you know that veganism has gone mainstream, baby!

Spay & Neuter Kansas City needs some extra helping hands! Check out SNKC’s latest list of volunteer opportunities here and, to get an idea of what they’re up to, see their weekly recap here. They spayed and neutered 97 dogs and cats and distributed 262 lbs. of pet food this week. Very awesome, guys and gals!

Next Thursday, January 20th, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) of Kansas City will be holding its monthly “Third Thursday Social.” Stop by at 5:30 PM and learn what you can do to help influence legislation for the better!:

Hamburger Mary’s
101 Southwest Blvd.
Kansas City, MO 64108

(ETA: The menu looks painfully short on cruelty-free options, so vegans may want to call ahead.)

Also next week: on Friday, January 21st, Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri (PPKM) will be holding a rally in Columbia, MO in celebration of the 38th Anniversary of Roe v Wade. Here are the details:

You have seen the protesters outside Planned Parenthood intimidating and harassing women for months; now it is time to show that mid-Missouri supports PP!

Please join us on Friday, January 21st from 11:30-1:00 as we celebrate the 38th Anniversary of Roe v Wade by showing support for Planned Parenthood.

What: Stand up for Planned Parenthood Street Visibility
When: Friday, January 21 from 11:30 – 1:00
Where: In front of Planned Parenthood in Columbia (711 N. Providence)

We will have plenty of signs but feel free to bring your own.

For more information or to RSVP please contact Michelle at 573-424-8717 or michelle.trupiano [at] ppkm.org

Since we’re dishing about all things local this week, why not end with a video about veganism in Kansas City? VegNews correspondent The Healthy Voyager – intrepid as she is – visited the so-called Steak Capital of the world last summer in order to explore KC’s vegan options (surprising as they are in number).

Check it:

Featured eateries include McCoy’s Public House; Waldo Pizza; blanc burgers + bottles; The Drop: Bar and Bistro; and the blue bird bistro.

What, no Eden Alley? Omitting Cafe Seed and FÜD can be forgiven, I guess, since they’re relatively new. And Garden of Eatin’ is way off the beaten path. (Namely, St. Joseph, MO – up by the PPP, yo!)

But Eden Alley? Inexcusable! Best vegan buttercream cake ever!
