Create Your Own Pizza Challenge UPDATE!

Hey, folks! Remember when I mentioned that the UK-based restaurant chain Pizza Express was hosting a Create Your Own Pizza contest and begged UK vegans to flood their inboxes with vegan entries? Well, the submissions have been gathered; the pizzas, baked and taste-tested; and the finalists, whittled down to a lucky few. And I’m happy to report that one of the final five is a vegan pie!: namely, the Pizza Levantina, created by Sarah Walker (of Chuck fame, perhaps? That woman sure is multi-talented!). The Levantina is a shiny mix of falafel, courgette, tahini, garlic and sesame seeds, and was chosen because “it’s really different…” And VEGAN! Did I note that’s it’s vegan, y’all?

So get thee to Pizza Express’s website and cast your vote – FOR THE VEGAN OPTION, HELLO! – by November 12th, okay? Voting is open to all, regardless of residency, so vote! For the vegan! Preferably whilst chowing down on your own vegan pie, but that’s purely optional.

  • The countdown to VeganMoFo has officially begun! Now in its fourth year, VeganMoFo is a month-long celebration of vegan food, in interwebz carnival form. Throughout the month of November, vegan bloggers the world over pledge to post about the joys of vegan food once a day (weekends are optional). Topics run the gamut, from recipes to photo essays to contests and giveaways.

    Last year, over 500 individual blogs participated, yours truly included. In fact, this will be my third year VeganMoFo-ing; have a little looksee at my past contributions here and, if you dig it, rejoin me on November 1st, wont you please?

Welcome to the inaugural edition of our newest feature here at the PPP Blog, the Saturday Garbage Plate! Those who follow us on Twitter are already hip to The Daily NOM, wherein we link to yummy vegan recipes – many (but not all; that would be nearly impossible, I’m afraid) involving pizza and pizza-related foodstuffs – that we’ve gathered from all corners of the internets and arranged on a pretty, happy platter for your gnoshing pleasure. Now, we don’t wanna strongarm y’all into following us on Twitter against your will or wevs, so every Saturday, we’ll post a recap of the week’s Daily NOM tweets right here on this space, for extra-easy convenience. (What can we say? We are people pleasers, through-and-through.) We also reserve the right to yip and yap about anything else that may have caught our attention throughout the week. Agreed?

  • French photographers Jean-Louis Klein and Marie-Luce Hubert expose The Secret Life of Harvest Mice as Never Seen Before! And yes, it’s about as adorable as you’d expect. Check out the slideshow here.
  • The ever-awesome Wing-It Vegan is back from hiatus, and in a big way: Halloweegan style! For those unfamiliar, Halloweegan is a month-long celebration of Halloween, as performed in vegan food. The pairing of Halloween and veganism is only fitting, if you think about it; the vegan set tends to lean towards religious unorthodoxy, heathenism included. Plus, we loves our vegan eats; not only do we enjoy consuming vegan food, but there’s also the joy of creating, discovering, discussing, fantasizing about, obsessing upon, and even playing with cruelty-free food to tickle our fancies. Show me a vegan and I’ll show you someone who appreciates a good (and good-looking) NOM.

    Case in point: Wing-It Vegan. What with her Chocolate Witches’ Hats, Eyeball Cupcakes and Spooky Pancakes, you might call her the High Priestess of Halloweegan. Don’t believe me? Get a load of her past Halloweegan creations, join her newly-minted Halloweegan Flickr group, or join her in observing Halloweegan at She will not disappoint! In fact, she’ll make you salivate. All over your keyboard. So wrap it in plastic, is what I’m saying.

  • Last week marked the first day of fall, and you know what that means – the start of a new school year. Writing at the IDA Blog, Annie Judah-Shannon offers a four-step plan for getting healthy, vegan options into your (or your child’s) school cafeteria: Veganize A School Cafeteria Near You in 4 Easy Steps! The short version? Agave nectar and reams of research, people.
  • Speaking of healthy school lunch options, please join Elizabeth Kucinich and the PCRM in asking Congress to support the Healthy School Meals Act. Pretty please with So Delicious on top?
  • Last but not least, we have two – count ’em, two! – new vegan eateries opening on the east and west coasts this week: Blackbird Pizzeria (a, duh, pizza parlor!) and No Worries (Filipino Vegan Cuisine, represent!), respectively. If you find yourself in Philadelphia or Oakland, be cool and patronize these fine dining establishments, mkay?
  • Okay, I lied.

UK Vegans: Enter the Create Your Pizza Challenge @ Pizza Express by 9/13!

Via The Vegan Society, I learned that the UK-based restaurant chain Pizza Express is hosting a Create Your Pizza Challenge. From now through September 13, contestants can enter their favorite pizza recipe for a chance to win £5,000:

We’re searching for the nation’s next favourite pizza. Whether it’s an old family recipe, an innovative topping combination or a whole new shape for the base, we want to hear about it.

The winner will have their pizza featured on our menu in restaurants across the country and earn a £5,000 cash prize.

Talent is hidden everywhere, and occasionally a suggestion comes along which is just too good to pass up. When one of our first pizzaiolos created his ideal pizza using spicy beef, the Sloppy Giuseppe was born. It’s now one of the most popular pizzas on our menu.

So get creative. Then enter online or by picking up an entry form from any of our restaurants. A panel of judges will pick their top five pizzas, then it’s over to a public vote to pick a winner.

You can view the full terms and conditions here. Suffice it so say, the contest is only open to UK residents – so, in the event that you’re not eligible to enter, don’t despair! Spread the word instead. *wink*

Pizza Express was kind enough to highlight The Vegan Society’s submission – which involves four different quarters, each inspired by the flavors of a different European culture – on its Facebook page, along with a photo of founder Donald Watson:

The Vegan Society have entered the ‘Taste the world tapas-style’ pizza to our pizza challenge. It features four quarters each with a unique taste of international cuisine:

Italian: Sun-blushed tomatoes, olives & artichoke hearts
French: A tomato and garlic base with green beans, capers & red pepper
Greek: Olives, yellow peppers, caramelized onions & cherry tomatoes
British: Asparagus with baby-leaf spinach, parsley & chestnut mushrooms

As you may have already surmised, mine involves black olives, fresh and sundried tomatoes, Lightlife Smart Links and Bacon, and plenty of Daiya and Follow Your Heart cheese!
