Saturday Garbage Plate: By the Power of Pizza!

Puffy Pizza Power!

So yeah, I’ve been kind of lax in posting these link roundups lately. By which I mean I skipped two weeks straight ’cause I had other stuff to do. (Like make pizza, duh!) In my defense, it’s Saturday! You can hardly blame a girl. I promise to be better, or at least try. And for breaking vegan and/or pizza-related news, you can always follow us on twitter @theppp! (Do it!)

Contests and giveaways! So Delicious is still going strong with its 100 Days of Change Giveaway. Today’s prize? A sterling silver Kate Spade picture frame – perfect for showing off that kickass pie you made last week. Enter to win on their FB page. Elsewhere on the interwebs – and in honor of World Fair Trade Day (that’s today!) – Luna & Larry’s is giving away one Coconut Bliss gift basket.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City is having a rough week, y’all. First Jackson County decided to cut the org’s funding, and then several air conditioning units were stolen right off the roof of the shelter! If you can, please consider donating your time, money or goods. Also download and share its Spring 2011 newsletter “The Scoop” to help spread the word about all the great work SNKC’s doing!

This week at Animal Haven: Baxter’s Boutique is open for business; read about young volunteer Beth Gasser, who donated a gift basket to the shelter as part of her Bat Mitzvah celebration; and meet (read: adopt!) Shilo and Achilles!

Get high – on life, on carbs, whatever – and watch this video. It’s weird and scary and I die a little inside every time I see it, and yet I cannot turn away.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Missy & the Coonhounds

May 13th, 2011 10:20 am by Kelly

Missy, a beautiful, silken-haired, golden Cocker Spaniel mix,
curls into a contented ball on her rescue person’s lap.

Chances are that if you’ve been reading this blog for a week+, you’re more than familiar with my love of older (read: senior) dogs – and not just ’cause I’m guardian to two of them myself. (Ralphie and Kaylee, holla!) Due to their age, seniors can be harder to rehome than their younger puppy counterparts – which is a shame, seeing as they’ve already been around the block and mostly know the ins and outs of living with humans. Their lack of excitability and puppy antics also makes seniors a good choice for older people. Besides, even the youngest pup will one day grown into a wizened old fella (dog willing) – and adopting a dog, whatever age she may be, is a lifelong responsibility. Advancing age – in all its bittersweet grace – isn’t an acceptable reason to break this commitment. We all age; perpetual youth simply isn’t part of the package. The pup you opt for now will one day grown into a “special needs” senior himself. (As will you, dear grasshopper!)

Take dear Missy here. A gorgeous golden Cocker Spaniel mix, this older lady is currently staying with Animals Best Friends. Though she’s dealing with some age-related issues – diminished hearing and cataracts – she’s still one happy, active, loving gal.

Cocker Spaniel: An adoptable dog in Independence, MO

This beautiful buff colored gal is Missy. Missy is a very sweet, petite little Cocker Spaniel mix. Her DOB is 02/16/01. Missy has some hearing loss and cataracts. She gets along well with other dogs and has ignored the cats. She likes to go on walks and is good in the car. Missy is a happy girl who likes people, she wags her tail when someone comes in the room and she likes to follow you around the house. Missy is housetrained, she will let you know when she needs to go out. Missy is looking for that furever home to finish out the rest of her life receiving unconditional love…

Missy’s rehoming fee may be negotiable. If you are interested in meeting Missy, please go to WWW.ANIMALSBESTFRIENDS.ORG and complete our online application.

If you are interested in possibly fostering ANY of our WONDERFUL pets, please go to our website listed above, and go to the tab “HOW TO HELP” and fill out a foster application and someone will get in contact with you! 🙂

Thank you very much for taking the time to check out our kids!! Thank you for your interest in our animals. Animals best friends strives to make a compatible match with our families and our companion animals. Due to the volume of e-mails and calls we only contact applications that meet our criteria. If you are selected, we contact in five business days. If not contacted please pursue another shelter or rescue group.

Thank you, ABF Volunteers

If you’re looking to welcome a new friend into your home, please consider adopting a senior. Ditto: other special needs animals, such as those with health problems, behavioral issues, or those belonging to breeds which are commonly discriminated against. Dog will love you. Ceiling cat, too!

Bonus Friends!

Two large male coonhounds – both of whom are white, tan and black in color – stare balefully at the camera. “What are we doing here!?!” their eyes implore. (The heartbreak, I’m bringing it.)

While searching Petfinder for this week’s Friend in need, I came across this listing for two coonhound boys. That’s it; no name, just “Coonhounds.” How sad is that? Can you imagine – not having a name? Of course, they probably do have names – or did in another life – but sadly, those days are long behind them. And to not even be considered worthy of even a temporary moniker. Sigh. At least these guys aren’t numbered, consumable item styley. That’s something, right?

Anyhow, I found it all so terribly depressing that I had to share. Someone bring these guys home and spoil them with plenty of noms and snorgles, mkay? They so deserve it!

The picture just doesn’t do these two justice at all! We think they were abandoned outside our shelter when we were closed (we found one early in the morning and a citizen brought the other in the next day). Both are just as sweet as can be. Both are a bit timid of strangers at first but warm up very quickly. These two are young (about a year old) and would make fantastic family dogs. Please come see them today!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Cast & Stone

May 6th, 2011 11:25 am by Kelly

An older pair of feline siblings, Cast and Stone are among the most recent victims of the economic downturn. Once upon a time, the two lived in a cement mixing plant. Not a very hospitable place for two young kittens on the go, huh? Luckily, they were found and rescued by some caring souls who worked in a nearby office building. No one individual was able to take them home, so the employees adopted collectively: Cast and Stone were welcomed into the office building, where they lived for the next twelve years. Unfortunately, the business was recently sold, leaving the cats homeless once again! The two are currently staying with Kitty City Kansas Rescue in Shawnee, KS, but would very much like to find their forever home – together.

Tabby/Bengal Mix: An adoptable cat in Shawnee, KS
Medium • Senior • Male

Cast gas been living in a local business for 12 years along with his sister Stone. They were rescued from a cement mixing plant behind the business. The business is being sold and employees already have mulitiple cats.

Cast is a gorgeous Bengal mix with tabby and black spots and swirls. Cast loves to spend the day sleeping on a pillow on top of a desk near a window. He greets new people when they come in to visit. When another kitten was brought in to the business, Cast greeted the kitten and was very ‘motherly.’ When his sister wants the window seat, he moves away so she can have spot. He visits other employees through out he day to be petted. He does not like to be held and currently does not sit on anyone’s laps, but you wonder what he would do in a home when somone is not sitting at a desk! Ideally, it would be wonderful to adopt Cast and Stone together. We’re hoping they can find a home to live the last of their remaining years well loved and spoiled!

Special arrangements can be made to visit with Cast. His adoption fee is $50.00.

You can download an application to get pre-approved by going to our website at Click on the ‘contact us’ link. Kitty City Kansas Rescue is an all volunteer non profit organization.
We update our website daily.

You can visit our adoptable cats and kittens on Saturdays from noon-five at our adoption Center located at Mariposa Veterinary Center. Mariposa Vet Clinic is located at 13900 Santa Fe Trail Drive in Lenexa. Not every animal attends every adoption so always call or e-mail ahead to confirm that a particular animal will be present. All of our cats and kittens stay in licensed foster homes during the week (except for Saturday). For more information e-mail or call 913-422-1911.

Tabby: An adoptable cat in Shawnee, KS
Medium • Senior • Female

Stone has been living all of her life in a local business, after being rescued from a cement factory behind the store. The business is being sold and employees already have multiple cats.

Stone and her brother, Cast, have had the run of the building for 12 years. Stone loves to sleep in her basket behind the computer on one of the employee’s desk. She will nudge her brother off the pillow near the window when ready for a different view! She is a beautiful brown tabby with gold eyes. She spends most of her time in one office will come out to visit others around her. She loves attention but currently does not sit on your lap. You wonder what she would be like if someone was sitting on a couch and not behind a desk!

Adopting an older cat takes a very special person who is willing to spoil and love them knowing they are a senior cat. Ideally, it would be wonderful for Stone and Cast to live together in a home or even in another business.

Special arrangements can be made to visit with Stone. Her adoption fee is $50.00. She is up to date on all of her shots.

To adopt these two lovely seniors, get in touch with Kitty City Kansas Rescue asap!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Mags

April 29th, 2011 10:54 am by Kelly

Mags! Don’t let the blurry photo fool you; Mags is a beautiful older lady with long,
golden blond fur and a face that will split your heart in two.

Having just finished Mockingjay – the third and final book in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series – the other day, I thought it might be fun to choose this week’s Friend in need not by species, age, disposition, or health status, but rather by name, using my favorite characters as a guide. Katniss, Peeta and Gale are all obvious choices; and, while there are several adoptable cats named after Katniss and quite a few hits for Gale (but absolutely zero for Peeta, boo!hiss!boo!), I decided to go in a different, less expected direction. Namely Finnick, whose story line was for me one of the most compelling in the series. (Don’t worry, this post is spoiler-free!) Alas, the lone Finnick on Petfinder – a mastiff mix from Maryland – has already been adopted. (That’s a good thing, y’all!) And so I arrived at Mags, Finnick’s fellow tribute from District 4.

Though she says little during her brief appearance in Catching Fire, Mags captured my heart. Like Katniss, she volunteered to take a loved one’s place in the Games, almost certainly sacrificing her own life in the process. She’s a sweet woman, elderly and frail but still capable, both physically and mentally. Mags is one of the first people Katniss chooses as an ally, and Katniss’ trust in her is not misplaced.

Much like District 4 Mags, St. Louis Mags is an older lady whose loyalty, heart and wisdom match her years. This golden retriever girl may be long and gray in the snout, but she still has a lot of life left – and she’d very much like to share it with you!

Large • Senior • Female

Mags is a wonderful ten-year-old lady. She loves her foster sisters, foster parents and even Stella, her foster cat friend. Mags is very well-behaved and wants to be at the center of household activities. She will let you know when she needs to go outside and thoroughly enjoys taking a leisurely stroll. If you are outside gardening, she will be content to follow you and take a nap in the sun! Whoever is lucky enough to be selected to be her forever home will thoroughly enjoy this sweetheart!

Bella, Little Bit & Roxy are Wayside Waifs’s Waifs of the Week! Someone adopt them, please!

With your assistance, Spay & Neuter Kansas City spayed and neutered 123 dogs and cats and provided over $1,490 in spay neuter subsidy assistance this week. Along with Wayside Waifs and Halfway Home Pet Adoptions, SNKC also held a memorial service for the two pit bull puppies who were abused, killed and then disposed of in a dumpster in Kansas City on Monday. At the time of this writing, SNKC has raised $7,500 in pledges to put towards a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

I’ve had calzones on the brain ever since the Parks and Recreation episode “Ron & Tammy: Part Two” aired in February. In a last-ditch effort to make the Harvest Fest happen, the Parks & Rec crew resorted to bribery a la a pizza party in order to convince the police department to provide free security for the event. Ben suggested calzones, thus leading to a running gag about calzones being disgusting and pointless (the worst food ever invented!), much to his chagrin. (Quoth the Police Chief: “What the hell is wrong with this guy?”)

The plot line left me totally baffled, cause calzones are the shiz! Pizza, made portable! Doubled down for extra-easy shotgunning action!

Must be a New York thing, then.

That’s okay, Parks and Rec, I still love you!!!!!
