This is such a sad story, y’all. When their owners no longer wanted them, they released Elleka and her companion into the wild to fend for themselves. Elleka’s friend was attacked and killed by a dog before Elleka was found and rescued by the Missouri House Rabbit Society. And, surprise surprise, it just so happens that she was pregnant!

Though these babies will never know their father, at least they’ll be adopted into safe, loving homes. This is where you come in, dear readers! Three of the five babies have been adopted, but mom and her remaining two children are still available – and the MHRS wants to keep them together. If you think you have what it takes to care for three fluffy little bundles of joy, what are you waiting for? Arrange a meeting today! (Seriously, free up some more spots in the foster homes!)

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING THREE WONDERFUL RABBITS A FOREVER HOME. They are litter trained and friendly. Here is their story: Elleka (gray and white Dutch) and her companion were released by their owners to fend for themselves. The other bunny was killed by a neighborhood dog then a good samaritan contacted the House Rabbit Society and we took the surviving bunny. Two weeks later she had 5 babies. They are all adorable and sweet and in some way the bunny who lost his life will be remembered through these baby bunnies he fathered. Two of the babies are staying with mama. Elleka, Mitten (boy with white foot), and Bashful (girl all black) will be adopted as a trio.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Smudge and Poppy

People! Did you know that, at any given time, there are dozens of rabbits available for adoption in the KC area? It’s true! While dogs and cats may represent the majority of nonhuman animals awaiting adoption in shelters and rescue programs, “pocket pets” (not to mention farmed animals) need love too! If you’re looking to adopt a rabbit, the best places to start are LJ’s Briar Patch and the Missouri House Rabbit Society – but rabbits can turn up most anywhere. The Lawrence Humane Society frequently features smaller animals, like rabbits and rats, and currently there’s even one rabbit in the Kansas City Animal Shelter (say hi, Bullseye!). That’s no place for a bunny now, is it?

Smudge and Poppy are just two of the many rabbits searching for their forever homes on Petfinder:

Smudge and Poppy Smudge is a sweet and soft little hopper. As you can see he is very cute as well. He is ready to go home to a loving family who will take care of him. Smudge was just bonded with a beautiful chocolate Dutch bunny named Poppy. They are a very happy couple. If you would like to meet Smudge and his mate Poppy, contact us at

By adopting, you not only give a discarded rabbit a second chance at life, but you also free up a spot so that another rabbit can be brought into the foster home or shelter. If you’re thinking about welcoming a rabbit into your home, why not give these guys a look?

Find-a-Friend Friday: Lily

Lily the fluffy white rabbit gazes past the camera, seemingly entreating the cameraperson for a bowl of freshly picked veggies. You can come over and sneak carrots from my crisper any time, Lily!

OMD Lily, what a gorgeous girl! Such long, fluffy white fur, with just a hint of pink skin showing through. And the veins in her ears – they almost look like ginormous pink leaves of lettuce! Super-adorable, all around. And it’s your lucky day, ’cause the lady would love to come home with you!

Lionhead: An adoptable rabbit in Greenwood, MO
Small • Adult • Female

Lily is a beautiful white lady with an energetic spirit! She just loves digging in boxes, rearranging her pen area, and running around to share her joy with everyone in the room! She also has a sweet, snuggly side and will love cuddling up beside you for some nose and cheek nuzzles. Lily was found running outside and rescued by a good Samaritan. She is a friendly and outgoing girl, but still a little nervous about being picked up and handled too much. She has lived in a foster home with cats and very much enjoys their company as well. Please consider giving this lovely lady a forever home with you!

Lily is staying with the KC chapter of the MO House Rabbit Society, so give ’em a holler if you’re interested in maybe adopting her – or any of their other bunny charges, for that matter. Rabbits don’t seem to be adopted quickly, or at least not around these parts, which is is shame. So sweet and cuddly!

Happy Friday folks, and don’t forget: rabbits are for hugging, not eating! Ditto: dogs, pigs, cows and mice!
