Kittens, by five: black and brown and orange, oh my!

OMG Y’ALL FOXWOOD ANIMAL HOSPITAL HAS THE CUTEST MOTLEY CREW OF KITTENS AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION! They’re only a few months old, and super-tiny, and their fur is all the colors of the rainbow! Okay not really, but some of the little guys and gals are different colors: there are three black kittens, one black and brown tortoise shell, and an orange and white mini-Morris-looking baby. Normally I don’t feature the pups and kits, since they’re usually the first to be adopted in shelter/rescue situations, but OMG THE CUTENESS!

PLEASE CALL FOR AN APPOINTMENT! 5 Kittens: Born 8/10; 2 Black Female, 1 Black Male, 1 Orange Male, 1 Torti Female

Contact: Call Dawn at 816-665-2339 (Please leave a message if no answer and I will call you back)

Very sweet and playful. Current on shots, Adoption fee is $75 and that includes shots and spay/neuter and felv/fiv neg.

Seriously, if you adopt one of these buggers, you must invite me over to cat-sit some time. What’s that? Cats don’t need sitters? Poppycock!

If kittens aren’t your cup of love, Foxwood has plenty of adult cats in need of homes, too. Adopt, don’t shop!

SNKC’s 2010 Pledge & Winter Donation Drives

November 16th, 2010 10:24 am by Kelly

Spay & Neuter Kansas City recently announced the start of its second annual pledge drive. From now until February 24, 2011, participants can compete to win one of three prizes, with the top fundraiser receiving two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines and $300 worth of hotel accommodations. (The second and third prizes are a Magellan RoadMate 3065 and a $100 gift certificate to Petsmart, respectively.) The money raised will be used to spay and neuter Kansas City area dogs and cats in need – a core mission of SNKC.

In addition to the pledge drive, SNKC is also hosting a winter donation drive. Along with gently used dog houses, the group is in need of the following items: dog and cat food (e.g., to stock SNKC’s “pet” food pantry); straw; leashes and collars; dog and cat toys; and, of course, monetary donations, which will help to pay for spay/neuter procedures, gas for transportation, new dog houses, and veterinary care for sick and injured dogs and cats. You can find more information on donating and view SNKC’s full wish list here.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Ali

November 12th, 2010 11:18 am by Kelly

Ali is a black, tan and white basset hound/dachshund mix – though her short, thick legs, long body, droopy ears and large head give her that classic wiener dog look.

I combed through dozens of Petfinder listings this morning, looking for THE perfect dog to introduce y’all to. Problem is, they’re all perfect! Every animal is special and unique in her own way, and the many canines whose stories I pored over today are no exception. Finally I settled on dear Ali, for no reason other than that she reminds me of my own dachshund friend Ralphie, who underwent surgery to remove his right eye yesterday (melanoma; we’ll know next week whether it was malignant) and is recovering on my lap as we speak. Point being, Ali is just one of thousands of wonderful, loving individuals in need of a home at this very moment. If you’re looking to welcome a new nonhuman friend into your family, please consider adopting – rescuing – one of these many Friends in need.

Okay, so. On to Ali, who is currently staying with Animals Best Friends in Independence, MO. Here’s what he foster peeps have to say about this lovely lady:

I know that look! Miss Ali is about to stir up some trouble.

Saturday Garbage Plate: Happy Halloweegan!

October 30th, 2010 6:49 pm by Kelly

lol kaylee - b purty ether way

Kaylee, our 12-year-old rat terrier, dressed as a pumpkin several Halloweegans ago.
Her lol dog caption reads, “doggierella / turns 2 pumkin @ 12PM.”
Here, the photo’s title is really its subtitle: “lol kaylee – b purty ether way.”
Damn straight! My girl is bootyfull!

Those of you following us on Twitter may have noticed a break in our regular, pizza-related #noming. In honor of Halloweegan, we featured a variety of vegan Halloween recipes. And so, without further a-BOO!…

Just in time for Halloween: Pictures of Muslims Wearing Things. SCARY THINGS! Muahahaha!

Also, for those masochists and chronic procrastinators who have yet to buy their Halloween candy and/or costumes, hit up:

1) The Official Guide to Vegan Halloween Candy, by the sweet-teethed editors at VegNews; and

2) Take Back Halloween, “A costume guide for women with imagination.” (My top pick? Medusa. Definitely Medusa.)

This Monday, November 1st is World Vegan Day! It’s also Day Numero Uno of Vegan MoFo IV; be there or…don’t be. It’s up to you, honestly. But with 450+ bloggers from all over the world sharing their very bestest vegan recipes, stories, anecdotes and food not-porn, it’ll be your loss! You can follow my progress at www.easyvegan.info, if you’d like. I already have 16 posts finished, queued up and ready to go. No m’am, I am not playing around this year! Okay, I am. But hard! I’m playing haaaard! (In my best pirate impersonation.)

Don’t forget to vote (including YES on PROP B) Tuesday!!!

Last but not least, Kansas City vegan eatery Füd recently received a writeup in the Kansas City Star. Check it: At vegan eatery Füd, barbecue means jackfruit. Smileyface spoiler: it’s mostly positive, though the puzzlement over jackfruit seems…odd, somehow. (It’s a legitimate foodstuff, peoples. No one ever suggested that vegans consume it 24/7!)

Michael Jackson’s Thriller – what else!?!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Nikita

October 29th, 2010 10:35 am by Kelly

Nikita is a brownish-tannish-grayish domestic shorthair feline with a funny white chin, gorgeous green eyes, and a cute pink button nose. In this picture, la feline femme stares into the camera, her features accentuated by the black and white spotted background.
Photos courtesy HELP Humane Society.

This week’s Friend hails from the mean streets of Belton, Missouri, where she was picked up by animal control and brought to HELP Humane Society. Originally thought to be a feral cat, Nikita was entered into HELP’s trap, neuter & return (TNR) program…which she promptly flunked out of. Nikita, it seems, prefers the pampered life. Can you blame her?

Is this girl gorgeous or what?! Nikita was a feral kitten when she was brought in by animal control. She was put through our TNR (trap, neuter & return) program for feral cats…..which is why you see an eartip. While recovering from her vetting she decided that she would like to be tame and stay inside with the 2-leggeds that appeared to be taking care of her every need. So she stayed…..she is very affectionate and is awesome with other kitties…….how can you resist that?! Nikita, girl, born approx 2005

So, who will be Nikita’s new bipedal servant? Prospective volunteers should report to HELP, vet references in hand, ASAP!
