Because ferrets need homes too!

Little Tweak here is currently staying with I Am Ferret. I don’t know if they’re a newish rescue, or if I’ve just managed to miss their previous listings, but this is the first time I’ve found one of their little guys on Petfinder. Tweak is adorable if you happen to like pink noses and little feetsies – and really, who doesn’t? He’s one of three ferrets currently staying with I Am Ferret; perhaps you’d like to adopt a friend for him too?

Ferrets at Wayside Waifs! Ceola and Kathy are a bonded pair of young, female ferrets who need to find a forever home together. Which is totally awesome if you think about it; you know these girls get on well, so you don’t have to worry about spats or fights the way you would if you adopted two ferrets separately! So let’s see what Wayside Waifs has to say about Ceola and Kathy, shall we?

Hi there- I’m Ceola! I’m the sweetest ferret you will ever meet. Don’t let my red eyes in my pictures fool you (I know it can be a little scary). I’m an albino ferret, and red eyes just come with the territory! I’m much calmer than my roommate and best friend, Kathy. We need to go home together since we make such a great pair. We love to snuggle and cuddle up to one another. I tend to scare my caretakers at Wayside Waifs sometimes because when I sleep, I REALLY sleep. It’s hard to wake me up and that can worry my human friends. I think it’s funny! When I do get let out of my home, I get to run around the office and check out all the nooks and cranny’s that I’ve had my eyes on! It’s so much fun!

Although I know I would make a great companion for someone, I’m not appropriate for every household. I really need someone who can devote plenty of time to me and my b.f.f., Kathy. We can keep each other company but we’d really like your attention too. We can’t be left in our home all the time- we get too bored, and it’s not good for our health. We also need constant upkeep on our kennel or all of your friends will start saying they smell’ when we really don’t… Do you want to love us? If so, please come to Wayside Waifs and ask to meet us! We are so excited to find our new home, and can’t wait to meet you!

Hi there- I’m Kathy! I’m the funniest ferret you will ever encounter. I’m sweet and cuddly, but I also love to run around and make my human friends laugh. I tend to be more playful and social than my roommate and best friend, Ceola. We need to go home together since we make such a great pair. We love to snuggle and cuddle up to one another. When I get let out of my home, I love to run around the room and see what mischief I can get in to! There are so many different hiding spots and small spaces for me to squeeze through that I have a hard time picking which one to go through first!

To learn more about these lovely ladies – as well as the adoption procedure – hop on over to Wayside Waifs’s website. fwiw, there are a number of smaller nonhumans – aka “pocket pets” – currently available for adoption in the Kansas City area: Gladstone Animal Control has a ferret (Monkey Bone) and two guinea pigs (Fanboy and Chum Chum); the Lawrence Humane Society, as always, is home to several rats (Alexander and Avagadro); and of course, the Kansas City Ferret Hotline lists a few more ferrets in need of loving homes. A little further out, the Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka has five (count ’em, five!) guinea pigs. So open your home and your heart if you’re able, mkay? Even the tiniest among us needs a little tender loving care!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Mischief

Mischief is a ferret!

Mischief the ferret was found as a stray – if you can believe it! – and is now a ward of the City of Gladstone Animal Control. She needs a loving, ferret-friendly home to call her own, perhaps with a few ferret friends to keep her company. You can even wrap her around your neck and pretend that she’s your daemon; most likely, she won’t mind. She was named Mischief for a reason, right?

Find-a-Friend Friday: Woozelnaree

Ferrets! It’s not often that I feature ferrets in this here space, ’cause there aren’t usually of whole lot of the little buggers available for adoption – or at least not locally – and those who are, are usually listed through the Kansas City Ferret Hotline. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; not at all! I just like to highlight a wide variety of animal rescue groups, too.

Woozelnaree is currently staying at Wayside Waifs, which you probably know through its dog and cat rescue and educational activities. In the several years that I’ve been writing this column, Woozelnaree is the first ferret I’ve ever seen at Wayside. Here’s what they have to say about the little guy:

Woozelnaree
Ferret: An adoptable ferret in Kansas City, MO
Medium • Young • Male

Hi, I’m Woozelnaree! I’m a very handsome guy looking for a home to call my own. I’m a very well mannered ferret, and I’m usually easy to handle. I love to explore my surroundings and watch everything going on around me. Of course, I always want to join in on all the fun and mischief.

Are you familiar with ferrets? If not, let me enlighten you with some ferret facts. According to a popular ferret website, we are “the third most common uncaged pets in North America today.” How cool is that? That means more and more people are “ferret proofing” their homes and letting us live cage free. Once we are litter boxed trained and you have ferret proofed your home, you can let your ferret roam free around him/her room. Of course, you’ll want to keep my living area free of debris that I could ingest! And you’ll want to watch where you step or move things, just to keep me out of harms way. I’m very gregarious, and I love meeting new people. Ferrets are very social pets, and we often do well with being kept with other ferrets. What is life without a best friend?

Now you should know that I do have my faults. I am a bit of a kleptomaniac! Sorry, but it’s true! I’ll take whatever I can fit in my mouth and make off with it as quickly as I can. Don’t be surprised while you’re cleaning if you find my stockpile of stolen things. Those things may or many not include your long forgotten missing sock, a dryer sheet, a cat toy, a roll of stamps, some of your childrens’ toys, a dog toy, and the drain stopper to your tub. Consider yourself warned! And sometimes, just sometimes, we ferrets get a little excited and will give you a love nip. It usually doesn’t hurt much, but it is one of the ways we explore our world and surroundings. So if you aren’t comfortable helping me learn good play manners, than I may not be the right pet for you. If I still sound like your perfect pet, come make me yours today! I can’t wait to meet you! Ask to meet me, Woozelnaree, today!

Click here to see all the animals at Wayside Waifs. Please call our Adoptions Department if you are interested in this animal to make certain he/she is still available for adoption! ADOPTION INFORMATION: All Wayside Waifs pets are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations prior to adoption. Please note that in order to make the best match possible, potential adopters must come to the Wayside Waifs in person to meet with an adoption counselor and complete the adoption process. All members of the household (including other pets, if possible) should be present to ensure the chosen pet is compatible with everyone. We do not place holds or do adoptions over the phone and we do not ship pets.
