Find-a-Friend Friday: Hank

March 4th, 2011 10:23 am by Kelly

Hank, an adorable white and tan babykid of a goat, pokes his tiny little noggin through the square in a cow fence. Is this photo worthy of a calendar, or what? Hello, Mr. March!

On a whim I decided to search Petfinder for “barnyard” animals this morning, just to see whether any new, semi-local listings popped up. And, wouldn’t you know it – I found not, one, not two, not three, but four newborn goats located in Niotaze, Kansas! (That’s about three hours southwest of KCMO, for those too lazy or apathetic to Mapquest it. Hey, I’m not judging or anything.) Quadruplets for the win!

Alas, Hank is the only kiddo whose Petfinder profile comes equipped with a listing, so that makes him :::drumroll please::: our Friend of the week!

Hank
Goat: An adoptable goat in Niotaze, KS
Medium • Baby • Male

This is Hank! He was the first born out of four on Jan. 16th 2011. Four was too much for his mom to care for so he is a bottle baby. He is very friendly and would make a great pet. He is good with dogs, cats and kids. He is located in Niotaze, Kansas 67355 but we can help get him transported anywhere in the US. He will be ready for adoption when he is weaned, but we would like to have an adopter waiting for him. He can be neutered here or his new home will have to sign a contract to have it done. He will need to be adopted with another goat or go to a home that already has one. He has never been alone. His adoption fee is $75 to cover part of the cost of his care. If interested please email and I will send you an adoption application.

Hank’s three siblings – Dumbo, Lil girl, and Bubba – are all available for adoption through North Star Rescue, too. If you don’t already have a goat friend, perhaps you can adopt two siblings together? Goats are totes the shiz, you know!

Saturday Garbage Plate (on a Sunday!): Can you taste the love on your plate?

Wow, I totally flaked out and forgot to do the link roundup yesterday, didn’t I? I blame the craptabulous weather, which is slowly turning my brain into mush. Luckily, the temps in Kansas City should be warming this week, and I am super-psyched to spend some time outdoors with my five BDFs! (Best Dog Friends!) Also good: these links are just as delicious when served one day late. NOM!

(By the by, can you believe that the National Organization for Marriage has totally coopted this acronym for its hateful group? “NOM” should stand for all that is beautiful and yummy in the world. Denying GLBTQ folks their human and civil rights? Not so much. For shame!)

Contests and giveaways! Over at Vegan Planet, Robin Robertson is giving away a copy of her cookbook Vegan Fire and Spice; the deadline to enter is tonight, 2/13. Also, So Delicious is holding a “100 Days of Change Giveaway” on Facebook, with a different prize (and winner) each day!

Of course, don’t forget to vote in the 1st Annual Vegan Valentine Contest at Cook. Vegan. Lover. (I’m not saying that you should vote for me; just vote, mkay?) You have until tonight at 9PM EST!

Spay & Neuter Kansas City “is in desperate need of dry cat food and litter donations!! If you can help out in any way, drop your donations off at 1116 E. 59th street! Our kitties on out Pet Outreach Program will purr with JOY!”

Did you know that you can opt out of receiving the Yellow Pages now? It’s true! Welcome to 2001, y’all!

The SF vegan blog vegansaurus! has a guest post from St. Louis vegan Liz Miller, who gives us a tour of the vegan food options in that other Missouri city. Check it: Vegan in St. Louis: because you might have a connecting flight cancelled here someday.

2011-02-10 - Dog Treats & Book Piles - 0017

Pink Valentine’s Day biscuits that I made for my dog loves!
(& lovingly photographed on an animal-themed book pile.)
Recipe and details here.

Valentines Day! Whatever your plans for tomorrow, make them as cruelty-free as possible, yes? If you’re still shopping around for edible goodies, please use the Food Empowerment Project’s Chocolate List as a guide. Better yet, give your sweetie some handcrafted sweets, made by you with love (and vegan, fair trade chocolate, of course!). May I suggest peanut butter cups, coconut bonbons, rocky road bark, or chocolate covered pretzels? Or perhaps some chocolate-shaped vulvas for the vegan feminist in your life? (Oooh, me me! Pick me!)

Even a romantic vegan dinner at home, followed by a butter cream cake, would make for a nice surprise. For some ideas, check out VegWeb’s holiday page, as well as this guide to heart-shaped foods (hello, pizza!) from VegNews.

On the flower front, why not opt for living plants rather than decaying, pesticide-soaked, factory-farmed bouquets? (I’m partial to cacti, myself.) Or, if you simply must buy roses, think organic. VegNews also suggests making your own eco-friendly bouquet out of recycled paper, Martha Stewart styley. Finally, packets of heirloom seeds are a nice gift idea for gardeners. Plus, they serve as a much-needed reminder that spring is right around the corner. (And after that: summer!)

As always, I ♥ vegan etsy!

Also: these Vegantine’s Day Strawberry Love Bugs! from Wing-It Vegan.

(And yes, I totally cribbed the last few paragraphs from this post. That’s okay though, cause I wrote it, so it’s not stealing. Just cheating! You should also totally check out the v-day post I wrote a few years back, about pampering your nonhuman friends on this most cheesiest and manufactured of holidays.)

Finally, this week’s Valentines Day-themed video comes from Farm Sanctuary:

Reel Life at Farm Sanctuary – Ep. 5: Love on the Farm
On episode five of our Sanctuary Tails blog video series, Reel Life at Farm Sanctuary, National Shelter Director Susie Coston talks about love on the farm in honor of Valentine’s Day and introduces us to some very special bonded pairs, including Bing and Bessie — two incredible geese who have lived at Farm Sanctuary for 25 years. You’ll also get to meet some of our pig, goat and chicken friends too!

Love, it’s a beautiful thing. Ditto: compassion and respect.

Saturday Garbage Plate: Superbowl Sunday, i.e., Vegan Pizza Day #2

February 5th, 2011 12:07 pm by Kelly

016/365 2011 - Dinner @ WKDU

Forget buffalo wings and seven-layer dips! (Unless they’re vegan, yo!) This Superbowl Sunday, why not revisit Vegan Pizza Day by whipping up one of these delicious, cruelty-free pies? Slap some Daiya on top, and the otherwise occupied omnivores aren’t even likely to notice. That sound? I do believe it’s a two-point conversion for Team Vegan. (Yeah, I googled that term. What of it?) Nom!

Contests! Here’s a sampling of the vegan swag you could win this week: Alicia Silverstone is giving away a complete set of her 2010 ecoTOOLS collection; vegansaurus! has a copy of The Complete Guide to Vegan Food Substitutions up for grabs; and last but not least, upload a photo of your furkid to Leaping Bunny’s Facebook wall, and you could win a gift bag from Badger Balm.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s weekly recap is up! Also, SNKC is trying to raise funds for Diamond, a sweet girl who suffered an injury when her leg became tangled in a tie-out. Her people can’t afford the cost of treatment, and she may need to have the leg amputated. Remember, don’t tether your dogs outside unsupervised or for long periods of time, and definitely don’t leave them outside at all in this cold, snowy weather! (SNKC reports that it will be working with Diamond’s owners to find alternatives to chaining going forward.)

Hey hey, it’s World Nutella Day! Celebrate by buying a vegan version or making your own. All of the chocolatey goodness, none of the rape and baby murder!

On that note, let’s part ways with this heartwarming video from Farm Sanctuary. Blitzen, Lawrence and Alexander’s Welcome Home tells the story of three male dairy calves rescued from a stockyard in New York. The three babies were sickly and required medical care at Cornell University before they could be relocated to Farm Sanctuary’s New York Shelter (which I will visit one day, I swear!).

Saturday Garbage Plate: VEGAN PIZZA DAY IS NOW!

January 29th, 2011 1:50 pm by Kelly

Daiya vegan cheese pizza!

Gooey, stretchy, cheesy, oozey, melty VEGAN PIZZA! with Daiya cheese, red sauce
and a gluten-free organic cornmeal crust. Praise be!, indeed.
CC image via Flickr user digiyesica.

Oh yay, Vegan Pizza Day is finally here! For dinner, I shall be swimming in a pool of liquid Daiya and pizza sauce; until then, all I have are my fantasies – inspired, in no small part, by this week’s nom roundup. Ditto: my Flickr favorites, which is stuffed so full of vegan pizza photos that I’m starting to look like I have a sexual fetish or something. (Cue: images of me poking a hot, saucy pizza à la America Pie, whilst moaning in simultaneous fits of pain and pleasure.)

Um, yeah, I’ll stop talking now. You’re welcome.

Whether on Facebook, Twitter or in the “real world,” you can join in the day’s vegan pizza festivities in a number of ways:

– Go to VeganPizzaDay.com for a list of events, participating eateries, news coverage and the like;

– Follow @VeganPizzaDay on twitter to stay up-to-date on the day’s vegan pizza offerings around the U.S.;

– Share your vegan pizza not-porn on Facebook and tag Vegan Pizza Day so all can see;

– And while you’re at it, “like” Vegan Pizza Day on FB!

I’ll also be tweeting coverage of Vegan Pizza Day @ThePPP and will share my own photos after dinner – assuming, of course, I’m able to pull myself out of the inevitable carb coma long enough do so. Wish me luck, peeps!

Now on to this week’s contests and giveaways! PETA has one gorgeous, cozy, wool-free Vaute Couture coat up for grabs; Lightlife is giving away prize packages to three lucky readers at Leslie Loves Veggies; Vegetarian Star has two coupons good for free Gardein products; C’est La Vegan is giving away a jar of Vegan Queso (yum!); and you can win a Crazy Sexy Diet gift package, courtesy of VegNews. Methinks I’ll regret telling you about the Vaute Couture giveaway. I WANT THAT COAT!

Elsewhere on the internets:

We found a kitty on our doorstep last week! No, for reals!

2011-01-19 - Lemmy - 0017

Lemmy the New Kitteh. His little kitteh balls look like plush pom poms.
I could make a flying spaghetti monster on his bum, y’all!
(CAN and WILL! buahahahaha!)

In celebration of The Gentle Barn’s first year on Facebook, a generous supporter will donate $1 for every fan who “likes” The Gentle Barn – but only if they reach 100,000 fans by March 1st! If you’re on Facebook, please “like” The Gentle Barn and spread the word!

The anti-tethering group Dogs Deserve Better (DDB) needs volunteers to help make its 9th annual Have a Heart for Chained Dogs Week a success. The campaign, which takes place the week of Valentine’s Day, involves sending hand-crafted Valentine’s cards, brochures and coupons for dog supplies to the owners of chained dogs, in order to raise awareness for chained and penned dogs – with the ultimate goal of bringing them indoors. You can help by making cards, donating coupons, and submitting the addresses of chained dogs.

Help In Defense of Animals (IDA) help the nonhuman victims of the recent floods in Australia and Brazil. Donate to its disaster relief fund and share these heartbreaking images with your friends, family and social networks.

As always (okay, three weeks and counting!), check out Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s volunteer opportunities and weekly recap. (Which doesn’t seem to be available yet, but I’ll update this post with a link when it is!)

Finally, for Vegan Pizza Day (not really!) the lovely Tracye McQuirter of By Any Greens Necessary shows how to make a delicious vegan pizza, topped with tons of veggies and nutritional yeast:

I’m not a “nooch” girl myself – you either love nutritional yeast or you don’t – but I am totally in love with her kitchen! So modern and matchy! Me, I have yellow ’70s laminate countertops. I could never shoot a cooking video in my own kitchen, even if I wanted to. Yuck!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Norman

he oh-so-adorably flashes his little pink tongue at the camera.

TOMORROW IS VEGAN PIZZA DAY, Y’ALL! Did you hear me? VEGAN. PIZZA. DAY. It ranks among the most awesomest days of the year, second only to my birthday!

Norman here *hearts* vegan pizza day too, ’cause it involves NOMing not on the dead flesh and stolen secretions of his beloved bovine, porcine and avian friends, but rather on gooey slices of goodness covered with melty, stretchy Daiya cheese and crispy Lightlife pepperoni. And veggies: bushels and bushels of vegetables, of every shape, size and color. Poor Norman is drooling just thinking about it! So do this gorgeous boy a favor and share a vegan pizza with a friend tomorrow; preferably one of the omni persuasion. Conversion by vegan food, amiriteppl?

Oh, and while we’re granting wishes, Norman could really use a home to call his own!

Norman
Cow: An adoptable cow in Hopatcong, NJ
Extra Large • Baby • Male

This is a courtesy posting for Antler Ridge (www.antler-ridge.com). Meet “NORMIE”, he is just 3 weeks old(1/1/11) and will grow up to be 2000 lbs! He was a rescue, (call Antler Ridge for details) and he is up for adoption. He is a BROWN SWISS STEER. As you can see, he is just a friendly little guy, we enjoyed the day sitting with him, feeding him and talking pictures! We’d love to see him in a nice farm setting where he can grow up and bring pleasure and enjoyment to a nice family!

More about Norman
Spayed/Neutered • Primary color: Tan

Norman is currently located in or around Hopatcong, NJ. (What can I say? there are precious few cows listed on Petfinder, probably because most are laid out in the packaged meat section of your local grocer at the moment!) Kitties In-need-of Someone Special, Inc. (K.I.S.S.) submitted Norman’s listing on behalf of Antler Ridge, which you should contact to inquire about him. Please do, okay? Norman needs a family of cows or other formerly farmed animals to call his own.
