Kansas City: Join Wayside Waifs for its 20th Annual “Strutt With Your Mutt” on September 25th!

September 22nd, 2010 5:54 pm by Kelly

Hey, Kansas Citians! Got plans this weekend? No? Well, now you do!

This Saturday, September 25th, Wayside Waifs is holding its 20th annual “Strutt With Your Mutt” fundraising walk. Bring your favorite furry dog friend and join hundreds of like-minded animal lovers to help raise funds for Wayside Waifs. The 3k Strutt begins at 10 AM sharp at the Trolley Trail at 62nd Terrace & Brookside Plaza, with festivities lasting through 1 PM.

This year, the traditional Strutt will be accompanied by a Catwalk for the feline set (unfortunately, those humans walking the Catwalk will have to leave their cat friends safely at home), as well as an earlier, human-only Strutt 5K Fun Run at 8 AM, a 1 Mile Kids Run at 8:15 AM, and a Pancake Breakfast (probably not vegan; cue: sad strutter) at 8:30 AM. Additional activities include $25 microchipping, a mobile adoption fair, Canine Good Citizen Testing, animal companion portraits, and assorted dog contests, including one for best costume. (That sound? My dog-kids, going into hiding.)

Registration for the Strutt costs $35, and participants are encouraged (though not required) to collect pledges for the event.

Let PCRM Kickstart Your Heart (With Heirloom Tomatoes)!

September 4th, 2010 12:02 pm by Kelly

Several times a year, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) – an advocacy group comprised of medical professionals and laypeople, “working together for compassionate and effective medical practice, research, and health promotion” – holds a 21-Day Vegan Kickstart challenge. The program provides participants – omnivores, vegetarians, and vegans alike – with tips, tools, and information to help them transition to a vegan diet, whether for three weeks or (hopefully) a lifetime. Newbie and old school vegans alike can also benefit from the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart, which provides plenty of inspiration and support to help to remix a tired routine.

Although this isn’t to suggest that a vegan diet is necessarily one of deprivation and boredom. Quite the opposite, in fact – a point which is underscored by the 21-Day Vegan Kickstart itinerary:

Whether you’re drawn to chocolate, cookies, potato chips, cheese, or burgers and fries, we all have foods we can’t seem to resist—foods that sabotage our best efforts to lose weight and improve our health. But PCRM’s Vegan Kickstart will help you win the food fight.

Based on research by Neal Barnard, M.D., PCRM president and one of America’s leading health advocates, this 21-day program is designed for anyone who wants to explore and experience the health benefits of a vegan diet.

During these three weeks you will have an all-access pass to:

* Daily e-tips that will put you on the path to weight loss, better health, and greater well-being
* A delicious, easy, and satisfying recipe sent every day that will help you break your cravings for unhealthy foods
* Weekly motivational nutrition webcasts featuring Dr. Barnard
* Social support of other Kickstart participants through the Kickstart message board where nutrition professionals answer your health and diet questions

Additional tools include meal plans, restaurant guides, daily nutritional quizzes, and celebrity phone calls.

You can learn more about the challenge and register as a participant at (Or, you know, just watch the 83-second video intro, embedded below!) Some of the static features, including an archive of past recipes, is available online year-round – so don’t be afraid to challenge yourself any time throughout the year.

Farm Sanctuary’s “Walk for Farm Animals” is coming to Kansas City on September 18th!

Kansas City, Missouri

Meet the 2009 Kansas City, MO “Walk for Farm Animals” participants!

Every fall, supporters of Farm Sanctuary organize “Walks for Farm Animals” across the United States (and Canada!). The goal? To raise awareness and money for the farmed animal rescue group, as well as the animals for whom they advocate.

For those unfamiliar with Farm Sanctuary, the sanctuary was founded in 1986 by Gene Baur and Lorri Houston, spurred by the rescue of a sheep named Hilda from the dead pile at a stockyard. Though initially funded by sales of vegetarian hot dogs at Grateful Dead concerts, Farm Sanctuary has grown by leaps and bounds to become one of the U.S.’s preeminent farmed animal advocacy groups.

Farm Sanctuary currently operates two farmed animal sanctuaries, with a location each in New York and California. (If ever you find yourself in the area, a tour is a must! Plan ahead for an extended stay at Farm Sanctuary’s own Bed & Breakfast or Country Cabin.) The group also encourages the adoption and placement of farmed animals into loving homes through its Farm Animal Adoption Network (FAAN). Additionally, it coordinates a number of campaigns focused on improving farmed animal welfare (a controversial topic amongst omnivores and vegans alike); promoting healthy, sustainable, plant-based diets; and improving vegan and vegetarian options in public spaces. The donations raised by these annual Walks help to fund Farm Sanctuary’s activities.

This year, the “Walk for Farm Animals” will be passing through Kansas City (more specifically, the Plaza) on September 18th. Here are the details:

Kansas City
Date: Sept. 18
Location: Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St.
Registration Time: 11 a.m.
Walk Time: Noon
Local Walk Coordinator: Devin Listrom

Note: The Walk is across the street from the Sheraton Hotel.

Special Attractions: Please join us for a post-Walk vegan lunch at Füd, 813 W. 17th St.

Registration costs $15 in advance or $20 the day the of the event; preregistration comes with a 2010 Walk t-shirt. Participants are encouraged to drum up sponsors, and all walkers who raise $100 or more will be entered to win one of many prizes.

If you don’t live in Kansas City but would like to participate, you can find a list of Walks here. Thus far, Kansas City and St. Louis are the only two cities across Kansas/Missouri that are registered for 2010.

Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town on the 18th and unable to participate, but my younger sister has already recruited me as a sponsor. (And hopefully my travels will include a visit to Farm Sanctuary’s New York shelter, but we shall see.)

Which brings me to my final announcement: I’ll be on vacation and offline from 9/8 through 9/20, which means no new posts and only occasional comment moderation. Your patience will be rewarded, my grasshoppers, for when I return I’ll resume the Find-a-Friend Friday posts, as well as introduce a few new regular (food-related!) features. Until then, you can browse through 116+ past featured adoptables at the now-defunct Kansas City Freecycle blog, of which the Find-a-Friend Friday column is an extension.

August 24th, 2010 10:50 pm by Kelly

This Saturday, August 28, Spay & Neuter Kansas City will be holding two fundraising events in the Westport area:

* A family-friendly, “pre-crawl” event is scheduled from 10AM to 1PM in the Buzzard Beach parking lot. The first 50 attendees will receive a free “doggy bag,” and there will also be a “doggy wash” as well as an adoption fair. For the kiddos: face painting and bounce houses!

* The Pub Crawl takes place from 2PM to 5PM, with an official after hours party at Kelly’s bar. A $10 bracelet will score you drink specials at participating bars and restaurants, including:

Westport Cafe & Bar
Joe’s Pizza
Dark Horse
Riot Room

$20 advance tickets are available, which include a bracelet and a SNKC t-shirt!

For more details, email or call Tamara at SNKC: tamara [at] or 816-353-0940.

If you’d like to help out, SNKC is still in need of volunteers:

SNKC operates a number of essential programs in the KC area, including a free animal companion food pantry; low-cost spay and neuter programs; low-cost vaccinations and select veterinary services; and a variety of “pet” outreach services, including both education and veterinary and material assistance to low-income animal companion guardians.

If you’re unable to attend the crawl – or would like to do more to help – please consider making a donation to SNKC to ensure that it can continue providing these vital services! Money is awesome (and sorely needed), but donations of animal care items and office supplies are great, too. Check out SNCK’s wishlist for more.
