Open up and say NOM! It’s your weekly vegan pizza nom roundup!

Contests! There are some fun giveaways going on this month, folks.

Cook. Vegan. Lover. is hosting a Fiery Vegan Valentine Cooking Contest. From now until February 11, create and share a “fiery” Valentine’s Day-themed dish – appetizer, entree or dessert – taking plenty of photos, of course. Blog the recipe or send the details to CVL for a chance to win one of four different vegan goodie bags. I see: a heart-shaped pizza topped with jalapeno peppers in my near future! Or rather, Shane’s. Kelly can’t stomach fiery food, sorry.

Hop on over to So Delicious’s Twitter or Facebook page and share a photo of yourself enjoying your favorite So Delicious product. You could win five coupons, each good for a free So Delicious product – so what are you waiting for fool? Peedee and Kaylee are down with soy ice cream, yo:

2011-01-20 - So Delicious - 0002 2011-01-20 - So Delicious - 0009

AND they are adorable. Stiff competition, people! I kid. The winning photos are randomly chosen (I think), so my dog friends’ god-like awesomeness is tempered by chance. Even GOD (by which I mean DOG of course) must bend to the will of mathematics.

Calling all creative, multimedia types! Gardein wants you! Make a 60-second video featuring gardein products, and you could win a a FLIP (8GB Mino HD) and $50 in gardein product coupons. Additional prizes will be gifted to a second-place winner and two runners-up. The deadline to enter is February 2nd, so get creating!

Not really food-related, but Kitty Utopia is giving away a Sprout Cat Tree House. Just send ’em your cute, fuzzy and/or funny cat photos, and you and Mr. Kitteh could win! The deadline is March 31st, so you’ve got plenty of time for the inevitable photo shoots of frustration. Seeing as OMG I HAS FOUND A KITTEH ON MAI DOORSTEP! earlier this week (for serious!), we could really use a ginormous cat tree-house-gym-palace thingamabobbie. I’d like to keep my furniture intact, thanks.

Last but not least, PETA is offering up a copy of Fresh and Fast Vegan to one lucky reader.

Elsewhere on the interwebz:

Check out Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s volunteer opportunities and weekly recap here and here. And like its Facebook page, mkay? It has OODLES and OODLES of cute puppy and kitteh pictures, so there’s no reason not to!

viva la vegan! is looking for volunteer vegan mentors. Maybe that’s you? Or perhaps you’re the newbie in need of guidance? Either way, deets and signup sheet here.

OMG TOFURKY IS SELLING RETRO LUNCHBOXES TO RAISE MONEY FOR ANIMAL RESCUE ORGS! WANT WANT WANT! Not that, um, I have to carry my lunch more than 20 feet from the kitchen to the office. But still. RETRO VEGAN LUNCHBOXES!

Pssst! Vegan Pizza Day! Next Saturday! See you there?

No, wait.

SEE YOU THERE!!!!!!!

Saturday Garbage Plate: Looking for love and Teese!

Vegan pizza slices

Vegan pizza slices: The dough recipe I used is from Vegan with a Vengeance by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. Highly recommend! Vegan pizza with kalamata olives, cipollini onion, parsley and tomato.

Another week, another seven delicious vegan pizza recipes. I hope you’re bookmarking these for Vegan Pizza Day, people! (Seriously, those pies won’t make themselves…)

Contests!: Vegan Backpacker has three boxes of Primal Strips vegan jerky up for grabs; SporkOnline is giving away free online cooking classes to eleven lucky winners; FaveDiets is offering up two prize packages of MATCH vegan meats; and Tofurky is hosting the coolest contest EVER. Some of these giveaways end as early as tomorrow, so enter to win today!

vegan craigslist missed connections: now inspired by teese cheese! Forget the Washington Post; when vegan pizza pops up in the classified ads, then and only then do you know that veganism has gone mainstream, baby!

Spay & Neuter Kansas City needs some extra helping hands! Check out SNKC’s latest list of volunteer opportunities here and, to get an idea of what they’re up to, see their weekly recap here. They spayed and neutered 97 dogs and cats and distributed 262 lbs. of pet food this week. Very awesome, guys and gals!

Next Thursday, January 20th, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) of Kansas City will be holding its monthly “Third Thursday Social.” Stop by at 5:30 PM and learn what you can do to help influence legislation for the better!:

Hamburger Mary’s
101 Southwest Blvd.
Kansas City, MO 64108

(ETA: The menu looks painfully short on cruelty-free options, so vegans may want to call ahead.)

Also next week: on Friday, January 21st, Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri (PPKM) will be holding a rally in Columbia, MO in celebration of the 38th Anniversary of Roe v Wade. Here are the details:

You have seen the protesters outside Planned Parenthood intimidating and harassing women for months; now it is time to show that mid-Missouri supports PP!

Please join us on Friday, January 21st from 11:30-1:00 as we celebrate the 38th Anniversary of Roe v Wade by showing support for Planned Parenthood.

What: Stand up for Planned Parenthood Street Visibility
When: Friday, January 21 from 11:30 – 1:00
Where: In front of Planned Parenthood in Columbia (711 N. Providence)

We will have plenty of signs but feel free to bring your own.

For more information or to RSVP please contact Michelle at 573-424-8717 or michelle.trupiano [at] ppkm.org

Since we’re dishing about all things local this week, why not end with a video about veganism in Kansas City? VegNews correspondent The Healthy Voyager – intrepid as she is – visited the so-called Steak Capital of the world last summer in order to explore KC’s vegan options (surprising as they are in number).

Check it:

Featured eateries include McCoy’s Public House; Waldo Pizza; blanc burgers + bottles; The Drop: Bar and Bistro; and the blue bird bistro.

What, no Eden Alley? Omitting Cafe Seed and FÜD can be forgiven, I guess, since they’re relatively new. And Garden of Eatin’ is way off the beaten path. (Namely, St. Joseph, MO – up by the PPP, yo!)

But Eden Alley? Inexcusable! Best vegan buttercream cake ever!

Stuffed Pizza Slice

A slice of pizza pie, oozing-to-overflowing with White Sauce, broccoli, sliced onions,
black olives, TVP, sliced herbed tomatoes and shredded rice Mozzarella. Yum!

Stuffed crusts, pizza muffins and vegan Stromboli, oh my! Make sure your bib is tucked in, all nice and snug-like – here’s this week in #nom!

Do you receive SNKC’s weekly newsletters? No? That’s okay, ’cause I do, and am happy to share! Spay & Neuter Kansas City now sends out a weekly update of its activities and accomplishments, as well as its current volunteer opportunities. Here’s a link to the most recent edition. I’ll include these in each week’s roundup, at least for as long as I remember to. Give me a friendly poke or holler if I forget, okay? Between its spay and neuter assistance and “pet” food pantry, SNKC does great work. Help them out if you can – pretty please with Daiya on top?

Over at Vegan Planet, Robin Robertson is giving away a copy of her latest book, Party Vegan, to one lucky reader. The deadline to enter is January 12, so don’t delay!

Hungry Vegan is also hosting a giveaway – enter this week to win a copy of Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s Appetite for Reduction. Pssst! There will be onion rings! Just sayin’…

Vegan Pizza Day is coming! Are you ready?

To get y’all in the mood – as if any help is needed in this department! as. if! – here’s Eco-Vegan Gal’s review of Pizza Fusion, one of the astounding 99 (that’s NINETY NINE, as in one less than ONE HUNDRED!) Californian vegan and/or vegan-friendly pizza places included in Vegan Pizza Day’s list.

Just for comparison: Missouri has four. FOUR! In just two cities! Kansas? ZERO. Bleh.

Midwest vegans, we have seriously got to up our game. I am embarrassed for us. SERIOUSLY.

* Post title shameless borrowed from Vegan On A Mission. I gets a giggle every time I see it!

Find-a-Friend Friday: O’Malley

O’Malley, a fluffy, brown and tan colored Shepherd/Chow Chow Mix, smiles for the camera, tennis ball and fuzzy bone in hand. Errr, paw.
Photos courtesy The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.

I am totally in love with this week’s Friend in need, the super goofy and crazy adorable O’Malley. I know, I know; I excitedly make such proclamations at least once every other week, but still. That doesn’t make my squealing any less earnest. Besides, I am a sucker for “special needs” animals.

What’s O’Malley’s “special need,” you ask? He’s missing one of his front legs, which had to be amputated due to an especially serious injury. Not that O’Malley lets this minor inconvenience slow him down; not much, anyway. If you were to ask him, he’d probably laugh at your “special needs” labeling. He’s smiley like that.

O’Malley is currently staying with the kind folks at The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City (HSGKC), who describe him thusly:

O’Malley
Shepherd/Chow Chow Mix: An adoptable dog in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Adult • Male

null

Date of birth: 9/17/08

O’Malley is one of our MOVIE MUTT SUPERSTARS! Go to our web site to see a fun music video of O’Malley.

11/3/10: O’Malley is a cute and fluffy Shepherd/Chow mix pup. He’s friendly and sweet-natured. He is 2 years old.

We transferred O’Malley to our shelter from the KCK Animal Control shelter as part of our Ray of Hope program. His right front leg had been badly broken. We took him to a vet to try to save it, but the injury was too severe and we had to have his leg amputated. O’Malley gets around well, though, and he loves to run and play– he even fetches! (see his video)

O’Malley gets along well with female dogs. He gets along with most other male dogs as long as they’re not too dominant. If you have a dog you could arrange to bring him or her to our shelter to meet O’Malley to make sure they get along.

O’Malley has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. He’s short and stocky and weighs about 50 lbs.

MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS…

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (6 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, 5 lbs of Science Diet, toys, and educational materials including an excellent dog training DVD. And we’ll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please visit the Pet Adoptions page of our web site for more information about our adoption process. An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. You can download a pet adoption application from our web site and then fax or email it back to us.

> Please note that most of our dogs do require a fenced yard, although there may be some who are appropriate for apartment living or circumstances where a fence may not be required.

Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!

O’Malley is part of the Ray of Hope program, a totally rad partnership between the HSGKC and the KCK Animal Control Shelter:
