Find-a-Friend Friday: Jake

April 26th, 2013 11:25 am by Kelly

Jake’s a beautiful senior Brittany Spaniel guy with orange on his ear, around his eyes, and spotted on his body. Though he’s nine years young, he’s still filled with energy – he enjoys playing with other dogs, hiking with his humans, and scaring little critters half to death. Though he’s currently being fostered in Kansas, Jake can be transported up to 1500 miles – that covers quite a bit of the US!

To see a list of other dogs currently available for adoption through National Brittany Rescue & Adoption Network – a nationwide rescue group, they’ve got foster homes around the country – check out their listings on Petfinder. (I especially love Cheri and Merci in Colorado!)

KS – Jake
Brittany Spaniel: An adoptable dog in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Senior • Male

Hi, I’m Jake! I used to be an outside dog but have found that, even though I love running and playing outside, I like living inside with people and with my other dog buddies. I really want a new home that has other dog buddies for me to play with! It is so fun to have people around to love on me whenever I feel like it! Now that my heartworms are gone foster mom says it’s time that I find an even more fun place! Some place with a bigger yard, more trees and varmints and maybe even people that like to hike the river or woods trails sometimes. I like other dogs and get along well with the ones here. I like toys too and my favorite is the rope kind. I found a plush toy but foster mom called me a “de-stuffer” and took it away. I like cats too but foster mom says they are not prey (puh!) and I should not be in a pack with cats. I am 9 years old but am a typical brit with high energy and have no intention of retiring to lying on the porch just yet. I am smart and know lots of commands too. I love being with people and really want to please them. I know how to sit, down and take treats nicely. I potty outside and do not climb the fence. Foster mom says that I am a Good Boy! Do you want to be my new people?

If you are interested in adopting Jake, please visit to complete an adoption application. Please contact Nancy Walker at or 508-896-3602. The fee to adopt Jake is $200 to offset his vetting and to allow NBRAN to rescue more of these wonderful pets. He is also eligible for our senior-to-senior program. Transportation can be arranged up 1500 miles with the adopter being responsible for the last 100 miles.

Alf is a puppy at heart, yo.
Photos courtesy of City Of Cameron Animal Shelter.

Alf is an adorable older gent who looks like he could stand to lose an lb or two. A ward of the City Of Cameron Animal Shelter – which, according to the website, usually places it dogs and cats through Wayside Waifs – Alf is currently enrolled in Missouri’s Puppies for Parole Program, so you can be sure that he’s receiving lots of love and socialization before he finds his way to you. Yup, you. (One look at that gray snout and you are powerless to resist. Powerless, I say!)

Find-a-Friend Friday: Zoosy

Zoosy, why you so cutesy?
Photos courtesy of Hard Luck Hounds.

Zoosy is a special dog for a special human. A gentle teddy bear of a boy, he needs someone who can keep a close eye on him due to an ongoing medical situation. He’s had issues with bladder stones in the past and his urethra was enlarged so that he could pass them, but he needs a low-protein diet and a little extra TLC. Don’t worry though, this guy is totally worth it!

English Bulldog: An adoptable dog in Grandview, MO
Large • Adult • Male

Zoosy is a truly wonderful dog. He is blessed with a gentle, loving and carefree personality. He knows how to work the room and is always ready to play. He does love to wrestle and hopes his new owner isn’t afraid of a little slobber.

Zoosy has a rare medical problem but one that is more commonly seen in male Bulldogs. He makes cysteine stones in his bladder and those small stones were traveling through his urinary tract and causing an obstruction. When he came into our program he was unable to urinate freely and needed urgent medical attention. We performed a surgical procedure that eliminated the risk of obstruction. After a scrotal urethrostomy he has a larger opening to urinate out of, allowing the small stones to pass out easily. He has an opening to urinate much like a female dog would and is in the same general location as a female dog. His urethrostomy site is completely healed and he is doing great.

Zoosy is on a low protein prescription diet (u/d) due to the stone formation. He may be more prone to developing urinary tract infections and will need ongoing medical care if that is the case. He has an elongated soft palate as do the majority of Bulldog’s but this is not causing any problems at this time. He has a slight entropion of the right lower eyelid and will need ongoing monitoring of this problem. It is a common finding of bracycephalic breeds and may need medical or surgical care in the future.

Zoosy will need an attentive owner that is able to provide ongoing and possibly aggressive medical care. He is very healthy right now and should have a normal life span. He is vaccinated and tested heartworm negative. He is very good about keeping his kennel clean and should easily transition to a home environment.

His adoption fee is $600. Please inquire via email ONLY so we can manage the incoming applications in a timely manner. An application can be found at under the Hard Luck Hounds tab. Email completed applications to

You can access an application for adoption at under the Hard Luck Hounds tab. Prior to adoption all Hard Luck Hounds dogs are:
Spayed or neutered
Heartworm tested
Treated for intestinal parasites

Adopting your new best friend is always better than shopping for one!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Barney

March 8th, 2013 2:02 pm by Kelly

Photos courtesy of National Great Pyrenees Rescue.

I don’t think I’ve ever featured a dog from National Great Pyrenees Rescue before. Barney looks to be the only dog currently being fostered in the Kansas City area, so probably the group – which is a national breed rescue – doesn’t have a very large presence in the area? That’s my best guess, anyway.

Conversely, if you’re reading this from outside of the state, don’t let Barney’s location deter you; the group can arrange transport to the northeast for an additional fee. This is how our first dog, Ralphie, came to live with us: we adopted him from the Dachshund Rescue of North America, which transported him from his foster home in Indiana to New York, where we were living at the time.

Now on to Barney, who sounds like a pretty awesome guy!

Barney in KS
Great Pyrenees/Pointer Mix: An adoptable dog in Lenexa, KS
Extra Large • Young • Male

Full listing and online application at…. (sorry, no phone submissions).

Barney is a young male Pyrenees and Pointer mix, and is about a year old at most. He is very sweet, and is learning basic manners and commands quickly. He loves to play outdoors, and is pretty quiet and easy going indoors, especially for his young age. He likes all people, is good with kids but gets anxious if they chase him so probably best for a family that doesn’t have toddlers. Barney is great on car rides, a great leash walker, and loves other dogs; he is not cat tested yet.

Barney is house trained, is crate training slowly, and he does fine uncrated at night. He will make a family a wonderful happy go lucky companion. Barney is fully vetted including all vaccines, heart worm negative, neutered, dewormed, and microchipped. If you would like to apply to adopt this sweetie please submit an adoption application – hope to hear from you soon!

Adoption fee will be provided by the rescue when application is received; transport available to the northeast for an additional fee.

My name, it suits me.

Valentine’s Day may be a year away, but it’s never too early to find that someone special to celebrate it with. And what better sweetheart than a smiley little dog who wants you for her one and only human? Joy is a young lady who enjoys car rides and walks on the beach (or anywhere, really). She’ll tolerate cats but will save all her love for you. If this sounds like a love connection, get in touch with Autumn Acres today.

Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler)/Yellow Labrador Retriever Mix: An adoptable dog in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Adult • Female

Energetic little girl that loves to play

My name is Joy. I am an active girl who can get along with dogs but I can be a pushy gal for the center of attention, so my best scenario home would be without another dog – just kids or a person that is willing to give me attention and give me exercise. I am ok with cats. I am loyal to my owner and I would make a great watch dog. I love bye-bye rides and I want to go with you everywhere, so you have to be careful of me trying to go out the door with you. J I walk well on a leash after I settle down from the excitement of my walk. I am potty trained. I am a smart girl and will listen to commands but I do jump when I first see you and I sometimes forget that I am not to “herd” your feet, but I will not hurt you….I just want to play. My foster mommy is working on that but she thinks I am a neat doggie. Please email Jenifer and ask about visiting with me…I need a home with someone that will keep in line with my energy, but you will be impressed how sweet I can be!!
