If you’re looking to adopt a bird in the Kansas City area, you’re in luck! There are two bird rescues, Beak n’ Wings, Inc. and Burge Bird Rescue, which together foster dozens of lovely birds: parakeets, macaws, conures, budgies, and more.

Dave is a conure from Burge Bird Rescue. A lovely dark green color, Dave is one handsome dude. Poor guy can’t fly due to an old injury to one wing. I bet he enjoys hopping around the house though!

Dave the Nanday Conure will save you money because he/she never needs his wings trimmed. He can’t fly because he had an old broken wing that didn’t heal properly. He is in perfect feather condition, but sometimes his attitude isn’t so perfect. Like many mature birds, he can get territorial and cage aggressive, so you will have to understand how to work with a bird with a strong personality. Our birds are not available for breeding. Potential adopters must call for an appointment, and must pass a screening interview to ensure that our birds are going to a safe home. Adoption fee $75

If you’d like to welcome a bird or two into your home, please adopt – don’t shop. Feathered friends need our love and compassion, too!

I very rarely feature birds on Find-a-Friend Friday, due not to a lack of availability, but because they don’t photograph well! Or rather, their foster humans are not known to take good photographs of them in captive settings. (Cages make for such cluttered and depressing backdrops, don’t you think?) A few of the larger local bird rescue groups don’t even include personalized photos of the birds in their Petfinder listings, relying instead on stock photos. But if you’re looking to bring a feathered friend (or two!) into your life, rest assured that you have plenty of options for adoption! See, for example, Burge Bird Rescue and Beak N’ Wings, Inc., both located in the Kansas City area.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith, pictured above, come from the former. The pair were breeding birds until an accident rendered Mrs. Smith disposable. I’ll let Burge Bird Rescue take it from there:

Poicephalus/Senegal: An adoptable parrot in Grandview, MO
Medium • Adult • Unknown

Mr. and Mrs. Smith are former breeding birds of unknown age that were surrendered to another rescue after Mrs. Smith lost her lower beak in an accident and was not able to raise chicks. They were transferred to our rescue after two years because we specialize in special needs birds. They are not tame, but we are sure that someone out there is going to love them and provide them a safe happy home together for as long as they live.

Our birds are not available for breeding. All applicants must pass a screening interview, and may be required to wait 48 hours before taking home the bird if adoption is approved.

Adoption fee negotiable

Meet Tango, this week’s Friend in need! Tango is just one of many birds in the area who need an adoptive home to call their own.

This blue, yellow and white macaw dude is current staying with Burge Bird Rescue, who has this to say about Tango:

Tango plucks his chest a bit, but had perfect blood test results, so it may be from boredom or stress and may resolve once he gets settled into a new home. He is a sweetheart and likes to be petted once he gets out of the cage and gets used to you. He is only 8 years old, with lots of good years ahead of him. Our birds are not available for breeding. Potential adopters must call for an appointment, and must pass a screening interview to ensure that our birds are going to a safe home. Adoption fee $400 negotiable for the right home.

If you’d like to adopt this gorgeous guy, contact Burge Bird Rescue today! FYI: Beak N’ Wings in Shawnee Mission, KS also has a number of bird companions available for adoption.
