After spending much of last night updated old posts on my personal blog – and lingering a little longer on those tagged “my furkids,” including those published in honor of Petfinder’s Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day – I couldn’t help but feature a special needs animal today. Don’t let Rambo’s tough guy name fool you; due to a painful (and avoidable) medical condition, he’s endured more suffering than any living creature ought to – and, while the nice folks at Hard Luck Hounds have healed him, Rambo needs your help to stay healthy. Keep reading, kind-hearted people. Have I got the dog for you.

RAMBO
Bull Terrier: An adoptable dog in Grandview, MO
Large • Adult • Male

Rambo is an adult male Bull Terrier. He came into our rescue after he was relinquished to a shelter for chronic medical issues. His primary problem when relinquished was severe skin disease caused by demodex mange mites. What is often a manageable (non-contagious) skin problem had reduced this beautiful dog into a quiet, reclusive, painful existence. We took Rambo in and didn’t really know what we would end up with on the other side. We began a rigorous protocol of medications and bathing to heal his chronically infected skin. One of his pictures shows the “before” and is truly heartbreaking. We slowly began to see progress and his skin condition is now very well controlled. As he began to feel better we started to see the personality emerge of an active, happy and wonderfully “bull-headed” dog! He is always in a great mood and very friendly and playful. He is quite the comedian and really loves to play.

In the process of trying to figure out why he had the skin problem we discovered a loud heart murmur. He has been seen by a cardiologist and diagnosed with sub aortic stenosis. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=2344 He will most likely lead a very normal life and has been started on an inexpensive beta-blocker to help keep his heart rate an an appropriate number. He is thriving despite the diagnosis and although SAS can be unpredictable it is not a death sentence for Rambo. This diagnosis was the missing puzzle piece as to why his immune system was overcome by the demodex.

Due to the length of time it has taken us to resolve his skin problem Rambo has been with us for several months. He is dreaming of a home and backyard – and a family to call his own. Long term boarding does not bring out the best aspects of a dogs personality and boredom is a constant challenge. He is happy and well-adjusted but doesn’t have an adequate outlet for his energy level. Rambo isn’t allowed to play with small dogs or cats although he has never shown signs of dog aggression. He has not been neutered yet although will be done before adoption. He has one abdominal testicle and we were waiting for the ECHO results to proceed. After castration and after he is in an environment with consistent interaction and exercise we know he will make someone a wonderful companion. He is so eager for attention and will easily bond to his new family. We do not have any direct experience about how he would interact with small children. He will do best with an experienced dog owner who is willing and able to begin basic obedience classes and provide him with regular vigorous exercise. Rambo will need a bit of ongoing attention for his skin although we don’t expect it ever to be a major problem for him again. Regular bathing and close monitoring should keep his skin quiet and comfortable. The heart medications will need to be continued and the cardiologist has recommended annual follow up. Rambo’s new owner should be willing to maintain a relationship with their veterinarian so he can be monitored for change or progression.

He is truly a wonderful dog that has been given a second chance, now the final step will be a forever home equipped to help him with the challenges he has overcome. His ideal family will see the dog he can become when saturated with TLC and exhausted after playing! He will need structure and training but his new owner will see immediate rewards for their effort. Our Kaylee has a heart murmur – diagnosed three+ years ago now – and, while it is a constant source of worry for her humans, she’s as shiny as always; several inexpensive medications have kept the condition in check. So don’t let Rambo’s cardiac issue scare you away, nor his skin problems. Everyone is a little worse for wear some time, am I right?

Meet Freddie and Hobo, y’all! This super-cute little guys have a sweet story: Freddie the feral cat starting showing up at HELP Humane Society a few years ago and, after some time, brought a friend with him. When he saw how much love Hobo the not-so-feral cat was enjoying from the humans, Freddie decided that he wanted in on the action. And that is how the grinch’s heart melted.

If ever there were a pair of bonded cats, here they are! Can you tell immediately? Freddie showed up at HELP several years ago as a feral cat, he brought a friend with him and they were inseparable. Then one day, he began coming without his friend, we never knew what happened to her but then he started showing up with Hobo. Hobo was a stray cat, not feral but none of us could bring ourselves to bring Hobo into the shelter and leave Freddie behind again. Funny thing happened, Freddie was watching Hobo getting affection from humans and he decided ‘hey, I need to get in on this!’ So, both he and Hobo decided to come in out of the elements and find an awesome family that would give them a family together. Freddie and Hobo, boys, Freddie born approx 2003, Hobo, born approx 2006. Special adoption fee applies, $90 to adopt the pair.

HELP Humane is a non-profit TRUE No Kill animal shelter currently run on individual donations and fundraising alone. (just south of Kansas City). All HELP animals are treated by veterinarians, receive age appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, spayed/neutered and those incoming after Oct 2005, have been micro chipped. Cats have been FeLV/FIV tested and are negative unless otherwise stated. Dogs have been heartworm tested and are on heartworm preventative. We have been told by many adopters that the reason they liked adopting from us is because we have a happy place and all the cats are the friendliest ones they had ever met. HELP Humane believes that all life is precious and is therefore, a TRUE No Kill shelter. We have many FIV and FeLV+ cats in our care. They will live with us until they end their life’s journey or find a permanent home.

Poor Zoey! This beautiful bulldog lady was found roaming the streets of Kansas City. In rough shape, she was starving and apparently abused. But the nice peeps at Beagles and More Rescue fixed her up with plenty of TLC and now she’s ready to move on to her forever home. She’s two years young, so that’s quite a commitment. Lucky you!

Zoey
American Bulldog: An adoptable dog in Overland Park, KS

This is ZOEY! She was a stray in KCK and a friend/foster of ours, found her emaciated and in very sad shape.

We now have her fully vetted.

She is HW neg. All shots, spayed yesterday.

Zoey was found very thin at 80 lbs. and should weigh about 90-95 lbs. She is GREAT with Becca’s small kids. She would be a GREAT only dog or one properly introduced to a big dog like herself. She is a wonderfully sweet girl, kennel trained, loving the fact she finally has someone who doesn’t kick and beat her!

She is only about 1.5-2 years old.

Seven-year-old Kiki and her 17-year-old big sis Sunny are two shy kittens who have found themselves homeless in their adult and senior years. They desperately need a new home into which they can retire – together. If you’re the sort of special person who’d like to make that happen: firstly, I love you, and so does Dog. Kiki is the brown marbled tabby and Sunny is the white cat with black and tan spots. Kiki’s b.d. is 03/28/05 and Sunny’s b.d. is 09/14/94. They both came from the same home and I would prefer they be adopted together. I will do a two-fer on them to keep them together. Both cats are timid and will need a quiet place to reside. Both of them will hide if there’s too much commotion in the area. Sunny, right now is for the most part eating strictly canned food. As you can see, she is 17 years old. She does have a touch of arthritis. When she walks, she minces on her toes. She will need a little extra TLC to make her comfortable in her golden years. Kiki is especially timid. She is a very friendly cat, though and purrs up a storm when you pick her up and cuddle her. Please consider these two together and give them a loving home! My contact number is 816-810-4163.

So this is a kinda-sorta new recipe that Shane came up with last week. Using our standard fluffy white crust as a jumping-off point, he subbed in vegetable broth in place of water and added some additional spices to amp up the flavor. The result is a crispy, medium-thick crust that’s reminiscent of vegan vegetable or chicken noodle soup! Delicious and savory and not at all subtle. In fact, you may want to adjust the quantities of basil and garlic down, if an in-your-face crust isn’t your thing. Or add your own favorite spices for a different taste. May I suggest onion and parsley?

 

Savory Veggie Broth Crust

Ingredients

1 cup warm vegetable broth (110 degrees F / 45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon sugar
2 1/4 tablespoons active dry yeast
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 1/2 tablespoons basil

Cornmeal or cooking spray with which to coat the pizza stone or pizza pan

The toppings of your choice: red sauce, herbs and spices, nondairy cheese, vegan meats, nuts, seeds, fruits and/or veggies

(Pictured here is a beautiful vegan pizza pie topped with red sauce, mozzarella Daiya cheese, Lightlife pepperoni, and oregano. Simple, yet amazing!)

Directions

1. To prepare the dough: stir the vegetable broth, sugar and yeast together until dissolved. Add the olive oil and salt. Stir in the flour, garlic, and basil until blended. Form the dough into a small ball and let rest in large bowl, covered loosely with a towel, anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.

2. When you’re ready to assemble and bake your pizza, preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

3. As the oven’s heating, spread a dusting of cornmeal onto your pizza stone (or lightly coat your pizza pan with cooking spray). Using fingers dipped in olive oil (optional), pat the dough onto the stone, spreading it out evenly.

4. When you’re done shaping the dough, add your toppings: sauce, spices, veggies, “meat,” cheese, nuts, etc.

5. Bake at 425 degrees, for between 15 and 20 minutes for a single pizza, or 30 minutes for two pizzas.

6. Get your nom on!
