Okay, so I’d be lying if I told you that I didn’t choose this little guy based on his name alone. I mean, who doesn’t love tacos, right? Though he does get bonus points for being super-adorable, and extra pity points on top of that for coming from a hoarding situation. You should totally adopt him, is what I’m saying. Because TACO CATS. Your logic is invalid.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Penelope

Penelope is just one of many “pocket pets” currently available for adoption through the T. Russell Reitz Regional Animal Shelter in Manhattan, Kansas. She’s a sweet, friendly little guinea pig girl who gets on well with dogs and cats. Based on the Petfinder listings, I’m guessing that Dexter and Dudley are her sons – seeing as they were born at the shelter, and Penelope is the only adult female guinea pig in residence – but you’ll have to confirm that with the shelter.

Penelope was surrendered to the shelter because her previous owners were moving and could not take her with. She is very sweet, quiet and pretty easygoing. Penelope has been around dogs and cats and has had no problems with them. She has also been around children with no problems. Penelope is looking for that forever home with a family that will love her forever. Come meet Penelope today!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Bullet Proof

July 13th, 2012 11:55 am by Kelly

Bullet Proof is so named because he was shot. Twice. And didn’t die. No, really!
Photos courtesy of Missouri Pit Bull Rescue.

Missouri Pit Bull Rescue has dozens of awesome dogs available for adoption – including Praline, a beautiful girl who survived two years on her own in an abandoned, ramshackle house – and you should totally check them all out (and consider adopting one or two, if you can!). But there can be only one, and I chose Bullet Proof, for obvious reasons. Rushing to greet them at the door, this sweet guy was shot twice by police officers during a KCMO raid; thanks to his friendly, outgoing personality – and a kind-hearted veterinarian at KCMO AC – Bullet Proof lived to tell the tale. If anyone deserves another chance, surely it’s he.

ID Number: #19775
Breed: Pit Bull
Sex: Male (Neutered)
Age: 12-24 months
Weight: 60 to 70 lbs.
Color: Golden Tan
Good with dogs: Some
Good with cats: No

Bullet has quite the story to tell. Not only did he survive 2 bullets, but he never lost his smile during his ordeal. Talk about a trouper!!!

Bullet’s rescue story begins when his home was raided by the KCMO squad. Like most dogs, Bullet likely ran to the door to greet everyone unbeknownst to the officers. Evidently, an officer shot Bullet twice. One in the face and one in the neck/shoulder area. Bullet was rushed to KCMO Animal Control facility where a Veterinarian immediately tended to his wounds. Since he was gravely injured, euthanasia appeared to be the best option. However, even covered in blood and in great pain, the sweet dog was still happy to see people and was kissing everyone. The vet was so impressed by his loving disposition and resilience that he contacted MPR to see if we could help.

MPR agreed and Bullet was transferred to a private vet clinic where he underwent extensive surgery to extract the bullets and repair his shattered shoulder and jaw. Bullet has since been moved to MPR’s mini shelter where he is recuperating and thriving.

Since in MPR’s care, our volunteers find Bullet incredibly loving and playful, not at all aggressive. He just a silly dog who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. With much TLC, Bullet has been nursed back to health. He occasionally has a mild limp after intensive exercise but that doesn’t seem to be bothering him what’s so ever. In fact, nothing seems to bother Bullet. He has a very positive spirit and personality.

Foster Situation: Bullet is currently at the MPR mini-shelter. FOSTER HOME NEEDED! He sure doesn’t mind his stay at the shelter, but as soon as he finds a loving foster home, we will be able to help another dog.

Bullet is definitely a lover (not a fighter). He loves any person who will give him the time of day. He is very playful and energetic, though he also has his “couch potato” moments. He is still young and often acts more like a goofball than anything. He’s full of charm and happy drive.

Training: Bullet is crate trained, and is currently working on tricks. He is responsive and smart. He will require someone with good leadership though, as his fun-loving personality can often get in the way of his manners. He’s just too happy to be alive. Who would blame him?

Personality: Since Bullet is still a young buck (if he weren’t who knows if he would have survived such trauma!), he can be a bit more outgoing than some of the older, mature dogs he lives with. This is not a bad thing; he is not constantly hyper and begging for attention, he simply gets too happy-for-his-own-good when someone comes to see him. He just wants to show people how much he appreciates them for playing with him.

Bullet is energetic and we prefer a home with a large fenced yard for this happy boy so he has a good outlet for his energy. Being a big puppy at heart himself, Bullet enjoys the company of children but older kids are preferred.

Bullet needs a home that can provide him with structure and leadership. He is responsive and eager to please but he is big and powerful. He will test his boundaries without someone who doesn’t take the lead with him.

To adopt Bullet Proof – or any other of the lovely pibbles in MPBR’s care – hop on over to their website for additional details. If you’re unable to commit to the responsibility of adoption at this time, why not become a foster parent? Bullet Proof is currently staying in MPBR’s shelter and needs to find a foster home until he’s adopted!

Samba the kitten!

Samba is like the dictionary definition of cuteness. Soft, tiny, furry, playful – and clumsy, too! CLUMSY! Do kittens get any more adorable than this? I think not.

Quick! Adopt Samba before someone else does!

Samba
Domestic Short Hair: An adoptable cat in North Kansas City, MO
Small • Baby • Female

“Samba” can be best described as a clumsy little kitty with an eye for awesome toys and an affinity for trouble. She loves baskets, balls, string, and just about anything that could be remotely fun to play with. She’s still very young, so introducing her into a cat-friendly-dog environment may not be completely out of the question. She’s a furry little go-getter with the spunk and sass to prove it. And if you’re considering adopting saucy little Samba, make sure to check out our profile on her sister “Tango” as well. Keeping the siblings together would be ideal for anyone willing to take on double the fun!
