Petey? That’s my dog kid’s name too! Well, his name is spelled a bit differently – Peedee – but it’s all the same to canine ears. And yesterday was his tenth birthday, which is probably why Petey here jumped out at me!

Petey is a friendly, mature beagle boy who’s currently being fostered in Rapid City, South Dakota, but is listed with Basset and Beagle Rescue of the Heartland (BBRH) in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. If you fancy this little guy – and I know that you do; how could you not? – transport might be an adoption. FYI!

Petey
Beagle: An adoptable dog in Shawnee Mission, KS
Medium • Adult • Male

Petey is a seven year old beagle who loves trick-or-treating. If you treat, he will do tricks all day long! He is friendly and outgoing and always has a smile on his face. He gets along with the other dogs in the house and loves to go for walks and spend time outside. Petey is well-mannered and walks nicely on the leash. He is also crate trained and knows how to sit, shake and sit pretty. He is very snuggly and will happily sit in your lap and watch TV. Petey is fairly quiet, but still knows how to be a beagle when the situation calls for it. He is just an all around great dog and will make a nice family addition. He is neutered, microchipped, on heartworm treatment and up to date on all of his shots. Petey is a chunky monkey at 47 pounds. Like many of us, he could stand to lose a few, but a good diet and daily walks should help. He is currently being fostered in Rapid City, SD but transport can be arranged for the right home! His adoption fee is $150.00. New video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFUFCUcjUPg&feature=share

Doing the dinner dance. Guess his foster peeps aren’t lying when they say that Petey loves to eat!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Wanda

August 24th, 2012 11:19 am by Kelly

Wanda is a skinny, scrappy little kitty with lots of personality!

Wanda, what a catch! Good with other cats and dogs, mellow but with a mischievous streak, a loving mother and devoted friend. Why on earth isn’t all of Kansas City falling down at her doorstep?

Wanda, aka Pool Shark
Domestic Short Hair/Dilute Tortoiseshell Mix: An adoptable cat in North Kansas City, MO
Small • Adult • Female

Although her “Official” name is Wanda, this funny little girl has several nicknames. Sometimes we call her “Mellow Yellow”, because her eyes are the same color as Mellow Yellow soda. “Mellow” also fits her when she’s sprawled out, chilling without a care in the world. And unbelievably, she doesn’t seem to care when I vacuum around her. I’ve never had a cat that would lay there while I vacuum in the same room, much less under the chair she’s in, or with the vacuum pushing the kitty bed she’s laying on!

Other times, we call her “Momma cat” because when she came to us, she was quite pregnant, and had a litter of kittens. She was a proud and protective momma, and the nickname stuck.

Recently, we’ve started calling her “Pool Shark”, because she has figured out how to get the pool balls out of our pool table! Granted, it’s an old table, and it’s easy for me to pull them out…but I couldn’t believe it when she did it! She’s a petite little thing, and I’m surprised she had aspirations to play with pool balls! After she gets them out, she bats them around.

I would guess that Wanda is about a year and a half old. She enjoys going outside on the patio, or will follow me as I weed and water my flower bed. I think she would be equally happy as an indoor or indoor/outdoor kitty. She’ll follow me all over, but doesn’t make any motion to go out the door when I let the dogs out. She just sits there and waits for them all to come back in. But if you offer for her to go out, she’ll follow you.

See all of Wanda’s pictures on her online album here.

Wanda is extremely social, and is still quite a little fiesty kitten sometimes. She was a wonderful mother, but that’s over now and she wants a little spoiling of her own! Wanda kneads ALL the time, and loves to be with people. She’s not obnoxious about it, but she follows me everywhere I go. Wanda is not a lazy and laid back kitty all the time. Sometimes she has a lot of spunk and personality.

Wanda would love to be someone’s companion kitty. She plays with other kitties, and will chase and gallop around with them. I think she would do fine with another kitty, given a little space at first.

Wanda would do fine with dogs, because she doesn’t hesitate to put them in their place. For such a little kitty, she’s kinda mighty. She would not do well with a dog that gets mad when swatted, because she WILL swat at them when they get too close. Then again, she’ll also curl up with them on the bed for a nap.

Her vetwork is up to date, and she is spayed. She’s very healthy, active, eats great, and is perfect in the litterbox department.

Wanda has been sponsored, so her adoption fee is minimal.

If you would like more information about Wanda, please email Suzy@CompanionPetRescue.com.

Go! Adopt her! Now!

Just one thing: keep her inside so she doesn’t kill any other animals (not just birds, but also lizards, snakes, chipmunks…the list goes on!), and for her own safety as well. Deal?

Find-a-Friend Friday: Tater and Parker

August 17th, 2012 11:32 am by Kelly

Tater (right) and Parker (left), pair of Italian Greyhound brothers! Handsomely leggy, don’t you think?
Photos courtesy of Missouri-Kansas Italian Greyhound Rescue .

Tater and Parker are six-year-old brothers who came to Missouri-Kansas Italian Greyhound Rescue together, but don’t necessarily have to be adopted together. (Although wouldn’t it be wonderful if they were? Adopted together, I mean? Seriously, could you imagine losing your best friend and brother of six years after also losing your home? THEY ARE EACH OTHERS CONSTANTS, YO! …or that’s how I write my Tater/Parker fan fic, anyway.)

Don’t let the name of the breed fool you: weighing in around 8 to 18 pounds, Italian Greyhounds (I.G.s or “Iggies”) are considered a “toy” breed. These guys are tiny! According to their foster mom they’re also very well behaved, leashed trained, crate trained, know how to use a doggy door, and are just all-around awesome. So I guess the real question isn’t “Will you adopt Tater and Parker?,” but “When will you pick them up?”

Find-a-Friend Friday: Gigi

August 10th, 2012 12:29 pm by Kelly

Gigi is a mellow girl.
Photos courtesy of THe Humane Society of Greater Kansas City.

The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City has so many wonderful cats available for adoption, y’all! Take for example Ms. Gigi here. She’s been living at HSGKC HQ for years now and gets on well with humans and other cats, despite her feral beginnings. At eight years of age, she could use a proper home to retire to. Preferably with some kitty friends! Maybe even a second cat from HSGKC? Hey, it’s an idea. THINK ABOUT IT!

Gigi
Tabby – Brown/Domestic Short Hair Mix: An adoptable cat in Kansas City, KS
Small • Senior • Female

Date of birth: 11/03

3/1/12: Gigi is a very pretty little Brown Tabby girl. She’s very petite and she has a gorgeous coat. She loves other cats and she’d really like to find a home with another kitty or two to hang out with. She has a very gentle nature.

Gigi was a feral kitten who was fostered by one of our staff members when she was very young. She’s still quite shy, but she’s also extremely sweet once she feels comfortable with someone.

Gigi is 8 years old now and has lived at the shelter for most of her life. She’s never lived in a cage here; she’s always had free roam of our cat rooms.

Gigi would do best in a quiet home and she’ll need her new person to be patient with her until she settles in. She’d make a nice companion for another cat and having another cat in the home would be comforting to her. She’s a real sweetheart and just needs to be given a chance.

Gigi has been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for FIV and feline leukemia.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Spanky

August 3rd, 2012 10:43 am by Kelly

Spanky is a beautiful, fluffy golden Aussie mix with a smile a mile wide.
Photos courtesy of Unleashed Pet Rescue and Adoption.

Ugh, there are so many wonderful dogs looking for their forever homes on Petfinder and I just want to adopt them all! Just this week, I fell head over heels for Lula, the slightly pudgy senior beagle girl; Opie the Chihuahua and Poonce the Fox Terrier, a couple of old dogs in love; Lady the big black dog (also a senior, raising the strikes against her to three); and Ladybug, a teeny tiny refugee from the puppymill trade. I’d like write about them all, but we’d be here all year. So do me a favor and just click through and read and share their stories, okay? Help to bring these lovely creatures the TLC they so deserve in their twilight years.

As you can probably tell, I was searching for a senior dog to feature this week. And the “winner” is … Spanky! Despite her unfortunate name, Spanky is a sweet, happy-go-lucky girl who doesn’t let her declining hearing and eyesight get her down. Just look at that happy face!
