Astro, what a handsome guy! An ex-puppy mill dog

(Did you know that Missouri is home to so many large-scale dog breeding operations that it’s often called “the puppy mill capital of the world”? And that November 2nd’s ballot will include Proposition B, a piece of legislation designed to curb some – not enough, but some – of the worst abuses? Well, now you do! Go to yesonpropb.com for more. No-kill advocate Nathan Winograd also wrote an excellent analysis of the bill here.)

with a pair of impossibly deep brown eyes, Astro is currently staying just outside the Kansas City area, in Lawrence, Kansas.

Here’s what his peeps at the Lawrence Humane Society have to say about dear Astro:

null

Astro
Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler Mix: An adoptable dog in Lawrence, KS
Medium • Adult • Male

A curious expression and alert eyes will attract you to Astro, who is a very good looking dog. He is an Australian cattle dog and blue heeler mix, about 2 years old, and weighs 32 pounds. His evenly marked black and white coat is short and smooth, and is accented with gray ticking on his legs, chest, and face. He looks like he has been playing with a pepper shaker, which makes him all the more handsome.

Astro was seized from a large animal breeder, so he likely has not been given much attention. Therefore he is still nervous and timid, and he needs a patient pet parent to help bring him out of his shell and build his confidence. Astro has good recall, good manners, and wants so badly to find someone to love. He has a lot of energy and will need a fenced yard or country home where he can exercise. His new parent will need to take extra time to acclimate him to new surroundings, as a loving home is something new to this…

Though he didn’t begin his life in the happiest of places, Astro hasn’t yet given up on humans; in fact, he’s eager to find a family to call his own. Maybe this is you and yours? If so, get in touch with the Lawrence Humane Society today. (And remember to vote YES ON PROP B come November 2nd!)

Find-a-Friend Friday: Kittens!

October 15th, 2010 11:56 am by Kelly

The Oakbrook Animal Hospital in Gardner, Kansas, has four kittens available for adoption. Did you hear me? KITTENS! Behold the cuteness:

null

A woman dressed in scrubs holds up four beautiful, blue-eyed, scrappy little balls of fuzz for the camera. The kittens – siblings – alternate in color from orange and white to gray and white. Rinse, repeat.

These kittens are super cute! 2 boys and 2 girls. Available for $90 or 2 for $160. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, fiv/felv test, first vaccine, microchip and deworming. We ask that you call to make an appointment to see the animals for two reasons. First, our schedule at the hospital doesn’t always allow us enough time to be at the shelter with you to answer your questions. Calling ahead will ensure you come at a time so no one feels rushed! Secondly, some of the animals available for adoption are more popular than others. In the case that several people are interested in one pet, calling ahead for an appointment is the best way to make sure everyone is treated fairly. However, if you are not available to come meet a pet for several days, please be considerate of our time and the space in the shelter and realize that we need to find these guys homes ASAP! Any animal adopted from us must be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and tested before going home. This means that sometimes your new pet will be able to go home right away, but sometimes they may need to stay with us for a few days. Please call us at 913-884-8778 for more details and information.

OMG, that photo is so sweet, I think I caught the diabetes just by looking at it.

In case kittens are not your slice of vegan cake – and I don’t blame you; who wants to potty train a baby when one can choose from any number of mature, well-behaved, been-there-done-that senior cats in need of homes, too? – Oakbrook has plenty of adult cats available for adoption as well, as does nearby Olathe Animal Control: KGB. Emerson. Bill and Chandler (so cute!). Parker. A014059 (no name? that’s frakked!). Give one (or two or three) of these friends a home if you can, okay?

You can view each shelter’s full Petfinder lists here and here.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Capone

October 8th, 2010 3:38 pm by Kelly

To say that I didn’t have to search far and wide to find this week’s Friend would be an understatement. In fact, he practically jumped off the pages of Wayside Waifs’s latest newsletter so that he could unleash a stream of slobbery kisses all over my face! (Yes, please.)

Meet Capone, a sweetly innocent old gent who’s nothing like his namesake:

Capone is Wayside Waifs’ longest canine resident. Since June he’s patiently waited for a home of his own. This handsome, six-year-old Rottweiler-mix was brought to Wayside Waifs because his family had to move and they couldn’t take Capone with them. Despite his gangster inspired name, there’s nothing criminal about this guy. He’s a staff and volunteer favorite, and constantly makes us laugh with his goofy personality. Capone will make his new family very happy. He’s already housebroken, he’s lived with kids ages 2-18 and was loving and easygoing with them. He loves to run in the Wayside Bark Park, but also does very well on a leash. He’s eager to please you and has never met a stranger. If you are looking for a new family pet, please consider the amazing Capone! Want to see more of Capone? Watch his video!

Here’s more information, taken from Capone’s Petango listing:

Animal ID: 2828678
Species: Dog
Breed: Rottweiler/Mix
Age: 6 years 1 month
Sex: Male
Size: Large
Color: Black
Spayed/Neutered: Yes
Declawed: No
Housetrained: Yes
Intake Date: 6/4/2010
Adoption Price: $110.00

Hi, I’m Capone, and I’m a handsome, housetrained goofy fellow, that just doesn’t seem to be able to find my forever home. I was brought to Wayside by my owners because they had to move, and I was told I couldn’t go with them. I was very sad, but I’m making the most of a bad situation.

My family had VERY nice things to say about me when they surrendered me. First and foremost, they said that I’m housebroken! Hooray! I lived with kids, ages 2-18, and I was loving and easy going with them – playful, too! I had my own yard with a 6 foot privacy fence, and I stayed in my yard, and no reports of digging or anything! What a GOOD boy I am. I like to play with toys of all shapes and sizes, and I like to play fetch too! Can you come out and meet me and play fetch with me?

I am a lover of all things RAWHIDE, and I have been described as a very funny fellow. Actually, the description does read ‘big ole goofball’, and my friends out here say I’m just so lovable. Doesn’t that make you want to come meet me? I am an active dog, and I’m very good on leash. I like to please people, too. I’m always smiling – just a happy go lucky guy needin’ his own place to hang his hat.

I wish I knew exactly why I have had to stay so long here without anyone coming for me. Is it that I’m a little older? In my book, age brings wisdom. Is it my looks? Heck, I’m much more handsome and debonair than most of the other dogs out here. Is it my size? Once you meet me, you’ll see how loving and calm I am. Is it because I’m a little goofy about life and all things in it? Hey, I can’t help any of these things. I’m the nicest, sweetest guy who once was lucky enough to have a super great home, and that is all I wish for every day now – one more forever place and family to call my own. I’ll be a loyal and true blue friend to you, I promise.

If YOU have a super great home, would you please think about including me in it? I’m getting very tired of living in a shelter. Until then, I’ll keep patiently waiting for my forever family to come. Please make it you, ok?

Just in case these copious words of praise aren’t enough to sway your heart, here’s a video of Capone chasing tennis balls, frolicking in the grass, thrashing Frisbees, splashing it up in a kiddie pool, and just generally having a good ole time – despite the unfortunate twist his life has taken:

Seriously, how can this love muffin still be up for adoption!?

If you’re wondering the same thing, get in touch with Wayside Waifs today! (Before I beat you to it, kay? No, really, it is on!)

Find-a-Friend Friday: Mia

October 1st, 2010 11:06 am by Kelly

Mia, a gorgeous gray and white tabby with piercing green eyes, gives the camera a skeptical look of non-amusement. This girl? Has i can has cheezburger? written all over her.

Meet Mia, this week’s friend in need. Mia hails from M’Shoogy’s Emergency Animal Rescue. Located in Savannah, MO, M’Shoogy’s is just a short one hour drive north of Kansas City proper. Don’t let the drive – or Mia’s FeLV+ status – scare you off. Like all nonhumans, I’m 110% sure that she’s worth it!

Mia
Tabby – Grey: An adoptable cat in Savannah, MO
Small • Young • Female

Hello, I’m Mia. I am a gorgeous tabby and white kitty who if as soft and snuggly as the cat bed I’m lounging in. Life hasn’t been so easy for me though. I was recently abandoned on the front steps of Angel’s Vet Express in a box with several other cats. It was raining that night, the tape came off of the box and out I went. It didn’t take me long to realize how scary it was out in the big world, so I let the wonderful staff catch me and in return they promised me a life of luxury on the inside. If that wasn’t enough, I also am feline leukemia positive. I will need to be an inside cat either by myself or with other positive cats. Feline leukemia isn’t an automatic death sentence. I am young and healthy. I can live a long happy life just like any other cat. All I need is a loving home. Surely I’ve earned that haven’t I?

I’ve written about feline leukemia on the Kansas City Freecycle blog previously (for example, when featuring cats with the disease). While FeLV is not curable, it is treatable, and FeLV+ cats can live long and enjoyable lives. However, to prevent the transmission of FeLV, it’s best not to house FeLV+ cats with those who do not have the virus. For more information, check out this feature on Feline Leukemia from Best Friends Magazine. And dog (cat?) bless you for considering a special needs animal!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Beetle

September 24th, 2010 12:20 pm by Kelly

Some readers of this here blog may know me from elsewhere on the interwebs, including the now-defunct Kansas City Freecycle group. As its resident blogger, for several years I wrote a weekly column wherein I highlighted one (or two or three or even four or more!) nonhuman animal – furred mostly, but feathered and scaled, too! – in search of her forever home in the Kansas City area. (You can view an archive of all 116 posts here.)

Well, after a brief hiatus, I’m happy to resume KCF’s Featured Adoptable Wednesday right here in this very space. Welcome to the first – of many – Find-a-Friend Fridays!

Meet Beetle, our first friend in need. An adult pit bull terrier, Beetle is currently staying with Halfway Home Pet Adoptions in Kansas City, Missouri (behind the stadiums in Raytown, to be exact). As one of Halfway Home’s longest residents, his situation is urgent. Halfway Home, which serves as KCMO’s municipal animal shelter, is not a no-kill facility, nor can it turn away dogs and cats whose owners wish to relinquish them. Thus, Halfway Home will “euthanize” animals due to space constraints. The shelter’s veteran residents, of course, are usually the first to go. This includes poor Beetle (as well as fellow pit bulls Charmin, Godiva, Wilson, Annabelle, and Mimi, to name but a few).

Here’s what Halfway Home has to say about Beetle:

Beetle – URGENT!

This dog is running out of time at our shelter. Do not wait. Rescue or adopt today!

Meet Beetle! He is super cute and always ready to please. From what we can tell, he seems to be okay with other dogs, but because of his breed, he cannot live in a home with other males. We are strongly suggesting that any current canines meet Beetle before you decide to adopt him. We haven’t introduced Beetle to cats yet. We can check when you come to visit to see if he like the kitties or not. Visit Mr. Beetle today before you miss your chance!

and, of its adoption policies and shelter hours:

Many of the animals at the shelter are euthanized, adopted or transferred to rescue groups before we have time to update their listing. If you are interesting in adopting a new companion, please visit our facility. We have about 100 dogs on any given day, hoping for a chance to find love. Due to time constraints, only about half of the animals at the shelter are featured in Pet Finder.

We don’t know the background of many of the dogs that come to the shelter. We can only “guesstimate” the breed and age of those dogs. Size is also subjective according to individuals. Here’s a chart on how we base our assessments:

Puppy: under 6 months old – Young: 6 to 12 months old. – Young adult: 12 months to 3 years old. Adult: 3 to 10 years old. Senior: 10 years

Small: Under 25 Lbs – Medium: 25 lbs to 60 lbs – Large: 60 lbs to 100 lbs – Xtra Large: 100 lbs

Hours

Monday – noon to 4pm
Tuesday – noon to 6pm
Wednesday – noon to 4pm
Thursday – noon to 6pm
Friday – noon to 4pm
Saturday – noon to 4pm
Sunday – 1pm to 4pm

We are closed on holidays
