Farm Sanctuary’s “Walk for Farm Animals” is coming to Kansas City on September 18th!

Kansas City, Missouri

Meet the 2009 Kansas City, MO “Walk for Farm Animals” participants!

Every fall, supporters of Farm Sanctuary organize “Walks for Farm Animals” across the United States (and Canada!). The goal? To raise awareness and money for the farmed animal rescue group, as well as the animals for whom they advocate.

For those unfamiliar with Farm Sanctuary, the sanctuary was founded in 1986 by Gene Baur and Lorri Houston, spurred by the rescue of a sheep named Hilda from the dead pile at a stockyard. Though initially funded by sales of vegetarian hot dogs at Grateful Dead concerts, Farm Sanctuary has grown by leaps and bounds to become one of the U.S.’s preeminent farmed animal advocacy groups.

Farm Sanctuary currently operates two farmed animal sanctuaries, with a location each in New York and California. (If ever you find yourself in the area, a tour is a must! Plan ahead for an extended stay at Farm Sanctuary’s own Bed & Breakfast or Country Cabin.) The group also encourages the adoption and placement of farmed animals into loving homes through its Farm Animal Adoption Network (FAAN). Additionally, it coordinates a number of campaigns focused on improving farmed animal welfare (a controversial topic amongst omnivores and vegans alike); promoting healthy, sustainable, plant-based diets; and improving vegan and vegetarian options in public spaces. The donations raised by these annual Walks help to fund Farm Sanctuary’s activities.

This year, the “Walk for Farm Animals” will be passing through Kansas City (more specifically, the Plaza) on September 18th. Here are the details:

Special Attractions: Please join us for a post-Walk vegan lunch at Füd, 813 W. 17th St.

Registration costs $15 in advance or $20 the day the of the event; preregistration comes with a 2010 Walk t-shirt. Participants are encouraged to drum up sponsors, and all walkers who raise $100 or more will be entered to win one of many prizes.

If you don’t live in Kansas City but would like to participate, you can find a list of Walks here. Thus far, Kansas City and St. Louis are the only two cities across Kansas/Missouri that are registered for 2010.

Unfortunately, I’ll be out of town on the 18th and unable to participate, but my younger sister has already recruited me as a sponsor. (And hopefully my travels will include a visit to Farm Sanctuary’s New York shelter, but we shall see.)

Which brings me to my final announcement: I’ll be on vacation and offline from 9/8 through 9/20, which means no new posts and only occasional comment moderation. Your patience will be rewarded, my grasshoppers, for when I return I’ll resume the Find-a-Friend Friday posts, as well as introduce a few new regular (food-related!) features. Until then, you can browse through 116+ past featured adoptables at the now-defunct Kansas City Freecycle blog, of which the Find-a-Friend Friday column is an extension.

UK Vegans: Enter the Create Your Pizza Challenge @ Pizza Express by 9/13!

August 30th, 2010 2:57 am by Kelly

Via The Vegan Society, I learned that the UK-based restaurant chain Pizza Express is hosting a Create Your Pizza Challenge. From now through September 13, contestants can enter their favorite pizza recipe for a chance to win £5,000:

We’re searching for the nation’s next favourite pizza. Whether it’s an old family recipe, an innovative topping combination or a whole new shape for the base, we want to hear about it.

The winner will have their pizza featured on our menu in restaurants across the country and earn a £5,000 cash prize.

Talent is hidden everywhere, and occasionally a suggestion comes along which is just too good to pass up. When one of our first pizzaiolos created his ideal pizza using spicy beef, the Sloppy Giuseppe was born. It’s now one of the most popular pizzas on our menu.

So get creative. Then enter online or by picking up an entry form from any of our restaurants. A panel of judges will pick their top five pizzas, then it’s over to a public vote to pick a winner.

You can view the full terms and conditions here. Suffice it so say, the contest is only open to UK residents – so, in the event that you’re not eligible to enter, don’t despair! Spread the word instead. *wink*

Pizza Express was kind enough to highlight The Vegan Society’s submission – which involves four different quarters, each inspired by the flavors of a different European culture – on its Facebook page, along with a photo of founder Donald Watson:

The Vegan Society have entered the ‘Taste the world tapas-style’ pizza to our pizza challenge. It features four quarters each with a unique taste of international cuisine:

Italian: Sun-blushed tomatoes, olives & artichoke hearts
French: A tomato and garlic base with green beans, capers & red pepper
Greek: Olives, yellow peppers, caramelized onions & cherry tomatoes
British: Asparagus with baby-leaf spinach, parsley & chestnut mushrooms

What do you think? What does your dream pizza look like?

As you may have already surmised, mine involves black olives, fresh and sundried tomatoes, Lightlife Smart Links and Bacon, and plenty of Daiya and Follow Your Heart cheese!

Crawl 4 Critters to Benefit SNKC this Saturday, August 28 in Westport!

August 24th, 2010 10:50 pm by Kelly

This Saturday, August 28, Spay & Neuter Kansas City will be holding two fundraising events in the Westport area:

null

* A family-friendly, “pre-crawl” event is scheduled from 10AM to 1PM in the Buzzard Beach parking lot. The first 50 attendees will receive a free “doggy bag,” and there will also be a “doggy wash” as well as an adoption fair. For the kiddos: face painting and bounce houses!

* The Pub Crawl takes place from 2PM to 5PM, with an official after hours party at Kelly’s bar. A $10 bracelet will score you drink specials at participating bars and restaurants, including:

Westport Cafe & Bar
Californos
McCoys
Foundry
Harpo’s
Kelly’s
ONE80
Joe’s Pizza
Dark Horse
Riot Room

$20 advance tickets are available, which include a bracelet and a SNKC t-shirt!

For more details, email or call Tamara at SNKC: tamara [at] snkc.net or 816-353-0940.

If you’d like to help out, SNKC is still in need of volunteers: http://bit.ly/aQc4MU

SNKC operates a number of essential programs in the KC area, including a free animal companion food pantry; low-cost spay and neuter programs; low-cost vaccinations and select veterinary services; and a variety of “pet” outreach services, including both education and veterinary and material assistance to low-income animal companion guardians.

If you’re unable to attend the crawl – or would like to do more to help – please consider making a donation to SNKC to ensure that it can continue providing these vital services! Money is awesome (and sorely needed), but donations of animal care items and office supplies are great, too. Check out SNCK’s wishlist for more.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Jonathon

July 16th, 2010 10:49 pm by Kelly

Jonathon, a fluffy, maybe-a-little-chubby-but-who-can-tell-what-with-all-that-fur, black and white cat rests his sleepyhead on the wheels of an office chair as he dozes off into dreamland. Photos courtesy Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter.

Jonathon, what a cutie! Do I love this little guy because he looks delightfully ornery, to wit:

null

Hell to the yes! Just look at that crankyface! Adorable.

But judging from his backstory, Jonathon has plenty of reasons to be grumpy. An ex-feral cat who is FIV+ and has diabetes (um, maybe?), Jonathon needs a compassionate family who can understand and accommodate his special medical and behavioral needs.

His foster peeps at Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter explain:

Meet Jonathon: This big boys story began one cold winters day when we did some trapping. We were trapping some kittens and also trapped him. We thought we would just TNR but when he went for surgery he was very beat up and needed medical attention. He was very WILD and also tested positive for FIV!!!!! We had to put his medicine in his food. With time Jonathon tamed down and he is now a good boy that you just have to understand not to push him over his limit but otherwise he loves to play and you can now pick him up and we would never think of releasing him now. He is enjoying the good indoor life with plenty of food and toys and people who love him. Jonathon just needs a real cat person to adopt him and let him rule the roost!

02-2009 We found out Jonathon is diabetic. He is in a foster home now and doing great. He will either stay at his foster home forever or until someone who knows about diabetic cats is wanting to adopt him.

04-2009 Jonathon’s diabetes went away but came back a month later. Jonathon is a calm, laid back guy who is just as cute and funny as can be! He gets along well with the other kitties in his foster home and enjoys looking outside. He is playful and quite a character! He likes to “headbutt” his humans and his kitty friends. Contact FOPAS to meet this sweet boy today!

If you’re that totally rad adoptive family that Jonathon has been waiting for, hop on over to the Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter’s Petfinder page for contact info and details.

And don’t let Jonathon’s FIV+ diagnosis scare you off, mkay?

Testing, testing, 1-2-3!

July 14th, 2010 2:29 am by Kelly

Welcome to the brand-spanking-new Perfect Pizza Press blog, maintained by the PPP’s very own resident vegan-feminist blog mistress (blistress?), Kelly Garbato! Some of you may already know me from my own place, easyVegan.info. No? How about POP! goes The Vegan!, then? Doesn’t ring a bell, you say? ChallengeOppression.com? Still no luck, huh? Kansas City Freecycle? Nope? Flickr? Twitter? Facebook? Uncle!

Anyhow, as you’ve probably already guessed, I’m going to be talking a lot about food in this here space. And not just any food: pizza. Specifically, cheesy, crusty, melty, meaty, vegan pizza! (Yes, such a thing exists. It’s 2010, peoples; get with the times!) We’ll have NOM-y pizza recipes, gratuitous pizza (not-)porn, pizza-related humor – you name it.

But it’s not all about the pizza. (Mostly, but not totally!) I’ll also be touching upon a wide range of food issues here, such as: The environmental impact of modern agriculture. Diet, nutrition and public health. Food justice. Hunger and poverty. The intersectionality of oppressions. Ways that you can adopt a more compassionate lifestyle and become involved in combating abuse – human, animal, environmental – in your own community.

Because the PPP was born and raised in the Kansas City area (the utensil, not the company founders, silly – we’re New Yawkers!), area events will be a common topic, too. In particular, I hope to highlight local animal rescue efforts, for example, by featuring an adoptable animal located in the KC area every week.

Of course, as the Perfect Pizza Press makes its slow-but-steady march to market, I’ll also keep you apprised of our progress.

So that’s that. Until next we meet, stay shiny!

Oh, and before I forget: do join us on our Facebook page for additional links, updates, photos and whatnot, kay? And Twitter, too, if it’s not a bother? Please and thank you!
