Find-a-Friend Friday: Woozelnaree

March 25th, 2011 10:44 am by Kelly

Woozelnaree, a brown and white masked bandit ferret!

Ferrets! It’s not often that I feature ferrets in this here space, ’cause there aren’t usually of whole lot of the little buggers available for adoption – or at least not locally – and those who are, are usually listed through the Kansas City Ferret Hotline. Not that there’s anything wrong with that; not at all! I just like to highlight a wide variety of animal rescue groups, too.

Woozelnaree is currently staying at Wayside Waifs, which you probably know through its dog and cat rescue and educational activities. In the several years that I’ve been writing this column, Woozelnaree is the first ferret I’ve ever seen at Wayside. Here’s what they have to say about the little guy:

Ferret: An adoptable ferret in Kansas City, MO
Medium • Young • Male

Hi, I’m Woozelnaree! I’m a very handsome guy looking for a home to call my own. I’m a very well mannered ferret, and I’m usually easy to handle. I love to explore my surroundings and watch everything going on around me. Of course, I always want to join in on all the fun and mischief.

Are you familiar with ferrets? If not, let me enlighten you with some ferret facts. According to a popular ferret website, we are “the third most common uncaged pets in North America today.” How cool is that? That means more and more people are “ferret proofing” their homes and letting us live cage free. Once we are litter boxed trained and you have ferret proofed your home, you can let your ferret roam free around him/her room. Of course, you’ll want to keep my living area free of debris that I could ingest! And you’ll want to watch where you step or move things, just to keep me out of harms way. I’m very gregarious, and I love meeting new people. Ferrets are very social pets, and we often do well with being kept with other ferrets. What is life without a best friend?

Now you should know that I do have my faults. I am a bit of a kleptomaniac! Sorry, but it’s true! I’ll take whatever I can fit in my mouth and make off with it as quickly as I can. Don’t be surprised while you’re cleaning if you find my stockpile of stolen things. Those things may or many not include your long forgotten missing sock, a dryer sheet, a cat toy, a roll of stamps, some of your childrens’ toys, a dog toy, and the drain stopper to your tub. Consider yourself warned! And sometimes, just sometimes, we ferrets get a little excited and will give you a love nip. It usually doesn’t hurt much, but it is one of the ways we explore our world and surroundings. So if you aren’t comfortable helping me learn good play manners, than I may not be the right pet for you. If I still sound like your perfect pet, come make me yours today! I can’t wait to meet you! Ask to meet me, Woozelnaree, today!

Click here to see all the animals at Wayside Waifs. Please call our Adoptions Department if you are interested in this animal to make certain he/she is still available for adoption! ADOPTION INFORMATION: All Wayside Waifs pets are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on vaccinations prior to adoption. Please note that in order to make the best match possible, potential adopters must come to the Wayside Waifs in person to meet with an adoption counselor and complete the adoption process. All members of the household (including other pets, if possible) should be present to ensure the chosen pet is compatible with everyone. We do not place holds or do adoptions over the phone and we do not ship pets.

Recipe: Cheesy Vegan Tater Tot Pizza

March 22nd, 2011 3:44 pm by Kelly

2011-03-20 - Cheesy Tot Pizza - 0010

After the carb-fest that was our Bacon & Cheddar Double Potato Pizza (delicious, delicious carbs!), I knew my days of layering potatoes on bread* were FAR FROM OVER. By night’s end, in fact, I had devised at least twenty more ways to bake potatoes onto/into/over/under a pizza pie. And by twenty I mean three, but never you mind about that. I’m still thinking on it, kay.

Anywho, this next masterpiece was inspired by a certain Cheesy Tater Tot Casserole with Daiya recipe from one Snarky Vegan (my favorite kind of vegan, I tell you what). Shane made me this dish during last November’s veganmofo, and holy guacamole is it good! But such a downer, too. If I didn’t know better, I’d say there was tryptophan in the stuff.

Luckily, the pizza version isn’t quite as potent. And you know it’s healthy, ’cause it’s got mixed vegetables, yo! (White lies never hurt anyone, people! Just arteries.)

Instead of using the “white sauce” in the casserole, we went heavy on the cheese and also applied a thin layer of margarine directly to the unbaked dough, to help add a little moisture. This worked way better than the olive oil we used in the first incarnation of the potato pizza. But I bet the white sauce – maybe thickened up with a little extra flour? – would work well too. Next time, maybe?

2011-03-19 - Cheesy Tot Pizza - 0034

Ingredients

Dough

1 cup warm water (110 degrees F / 45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon sugar
2 1/4 tablespoons active dry yeast
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Pizza

cornmeal or cooking spray
olive oil

vegan margarine
cheddar Daiya cheese (or the vegan cheddar cheese of your choice)
frozen mixed vegetables (we used a carrot, corn and green bean blend)
48 ever-so-slightly defrosted tater tots, give or take (place them on the counter to thaw about 45 minutes before assembling your pizza)

Directions

1. Prepare the dough: stir the water, sugar and yeast together until dissolved. Add the olive oil and salt, as well as any extra spices or seasonings. Stir in the flour until blended.

2. Form the dough into a small ball and let rest in large bowl, covered loosely with a towel, anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.

3. When you’re ready to assemble and bake your pizza, preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

4. As the oven’s heating, spread a dusting of cornmeal onto your pizza stone (or lightly coat your pizza pan with cooking spray). Using fingers dipped in olive oil (optional), pat the dough onto the stone, spreading it out evenly.

5. To begin, spread a thin layer of margarine onto the dough, taking care not to press too hard (if using a pizza stone, this could push your dough out beyond its bounds!). During cooking, the margarine will melt (duh!) and seep down into the top layer of the dough, both moistening the pizza (yay!) and weakening each slice’s integrity (boo! hiss! boo!) – so go easy on it, mkay? Two tablespoons should do the trick.

6. Spread a generous layer of cheddar cheese onto the pizza, followed by the mixed vegetables (about two cups, but you can wing it), the tater tots (we averaged six per slice), and a final, thin sprinkling of cheese to bind it all together.

7. Bake at 425 degrees, for between 15 and 20 minutes for a single pizza, or 30 minutes for two pizzas. Be sure to rotate racks at the halfway point!

8. Get your nom on!

* Or, as Megan says,

I’m like, what’s up, carbs! You need a soft bed made of more carbs? Do the damn thing!

YOU DON’T NEED TO TELL ME TWICE, SISTER!

2003-03-15 - Peedee's LL Dog Rescue Listing

Tuesday was our furkid Peedee’s eighth Adoption Day! We love you, Peedee Monster!

As promised, I spent much of the past week working on a ginormous guide to disaster relief resources in Japan. While much of the focus is on animal rescue groups, I cover some of the more popular humanitarian groups as well. (In a nuthshell: yay, Doctors Without Borders! nay, Red Cross!) Here you can also find tips on choosing a charity, links to action alerts, details about vegan fundraisers, newsletters and more. Check it: Disaster Relief in Japan: Animal Rescue & Vegan/Animal-Friendly Resources @ V for Vegan.

Planned Parenthood’s Truth Tour rolled through Springfield, MO yesterday; today it will pass through Columbus and St. Louis! The Springfield Examiner reports,

Yesterday evening, Phelps Grove Park was host to the 2011 Planned Parenthood Truth Tour. Things kicked off with grassroots organizer, Crystal Brigman. Other speakers included Sara Lampe and Rev. John Andrews. Rep. Sara Lampe, an avid supporter of Planned Parenthood, stated, “Last year, Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri cared for 51,000 women, men and teens. Planned Parenthood provided 55,000 STI tests, 9,900 HIV tests, expanded HPV vaccine services for men, and educated 9,400 teens, parents and community members regarding issues of sexual health.”

Here are some photos from the event:

To see if your city’s on the list, check out the schedule. You can also sign Planned Parenthood’s letter to Congress and make a donation via the Truth Tour blog.

March 18th, 2011 5:24 pm by Kelly

Forrest (top) and Jenny (bottom), a beautiful pair of black and white German Wirehaired Pointers, each sticks their noses through the chain-link fences enclosing their respective kennels. Insert your very best “box of chocolates” joke here (just so long as you bring these sweeties home!).

Forrest and Jenny, oh my dog. Their names alone are enough to slay you with both sweetness and sorrow! This bonded pair of youngsters – big, silly German Wirehaired Pointers, them both – are currently staying with German Wirehaired Pointer Rescue Inc., which would like to keep them together. Obvs.

Forrest and Jenny are here. They are lovely dogs that would be good for a family. They have very good manners, and are a moderate energy. They are very connected to one another, and do well. They are fully vetted, microchipped, and ready to start their new lives. He is also said to around 18 months old. Jenny is approximately 12 months old. I can tell Forrest has raised Jenny.

Now Mom has written about me below, but I can tell you I am a dream. I would be good with children, and not many of us are. We like to jump up and play rough, but not me. I am a really sweet little girl. I would love to go on walks, car rides, and be someone’s lap doggie. Forrest really loves me, and I am his side kick, but Mom feels I would get on with most any dog….Please see the website to fill out an application www.GwpRescue.com.

Signed, Jenny!

Jenny and Forrest both have excellent manners, no jumping up, seem to be house broken…someone has loved them, but Jenny seems to be very gunshy. Well, well….why does that not surprise me? I believe they were let go or left in the field, they are sweet golden retriever types in a wire suit. Jenny is new to rescue…she is a moderate middle of the road energy sweet GWP that is 12 months old. She and Forrest get along extremely well, and adore each other.. She is a sweetheart, and has had all vetting. She is microchipped, crate trained and good on leash! Please see our website www.gwprescue.com for all requirements and info on adopting.

Unlike some of our recent features, Forrest and Jenny are located close to Kansas City, in Olathe, Kansas. If you don’t have a dog and are thinking about adopting one, why not consider two? You won’t even need to think of a cute set of matching names!
