Pretty kitty needs a home! This lovely “torbie” (is that even a word!?) lady is currently staying with Forever Friends Animal League, who has this to say about her:

Pretty
Domestic Short Hair/Torbie Mix: An adoptable cat in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Adult • Female

Please contact Robin 816-444-3501 (leadzeplin@sbcglobal.net) for more information about this pet.

Pretty is a beautiful girl with coat that’s part tortoise shell and part tabby — hence she’s what is known as a torbie. The beautiful shades of brown, rust and black fur are outlined in light silver when you look at it closely. Put that together with her small face, huge eyes, and lean torso and you’ve got one beauty queen of a feline.

Pretty is very sensitive and shy at first. She is O.K. with a few other cats. She is very loving and loves just hanging out with you. She’s also very good at petting you with her claws retracted. The best I’ve ever seen … or felt. It’s almost like she’s front-declawed.

Do you need a beautiful, gentle companion? To meet Pretty, who was rescued by a a group in southern Missouri and then transported to her current foster home in Kansas City, call her foster mom at 816-444-3501 or contact her at leadzeplin@sbcglobal.net

Pretty is up to date on shots, is spayed and has been tested. Her adoption fee is just $75.

Thanks for caring.

We are a foster home based shelter. Please contact the foster home or contact person for each individual animal. We will arrange to meet in a place that is convenient for the foster home and the prospective adoptor. If the animal and the family seem a good fit then we do same day adoptions. We accept cash or check.

MISSOURI FOSTER HOMES NEEDED! A foster home houses a dog or cat and provides love and training until it is adopted into it’s new Forever Home. We provide the food and vet care. You allow people to meet the animal and bring it to adoption events. Contact Debbie at 913-707-5111

Emergency Turlock Hen Rescue Benefit Day – this Saturday, March 3!

February 29th, 2012 6:19 pm by Kelly

By now you might have heard about the massive rescue of thousands of chickens from an egg farm in Turlock, California. A few weeks ago, A&L Poultry decided to stop feeding the 50,000 “layer” hens at the facility, abandoning them to a slow death by starvation. When local animal rescue groups got wind of the situation, they stepped up to save as many hens as they could – but not before going up against local authorities, who were intent on killing the birds.

While most of the hens perished, local rescue groups – led by Animal Place and Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary – were able to save more than 4,400 of these lovely ladies. Animal Place is caring for the overwhelming majority of the survivors; you can follow their progress on their website and tumblog.

As you can imagine, what’s being called the “largest rescue of farmed animals” in California – and perhaps US – history is a costly ordeal. Vegan-owned businesses, being the meccas of awesomeness that they are, are stepping up to help! This Saturday, March 3, a number of businesses are donating some (or, in at least one case, ALL) of their proceeds to the rescue effort. This includes Food Fight! and Herbivore Clothing Companyso if you were thinking of stocking up on some vegan groceries or animal rights swag, Saturday is the day! Grab some vegan meats and cheeses for your pizza-making needs – and even some Dandies and Hazelnut Butter for a breakfast pizza or two. Get gluttonous, it’s for a good cause! (Deets here.)

Of course, if you don’t need anything or would rather all your funds go toward the hen rescue, you can always make a direct donation: here for Animal Place and there for Harvest Home. Your gift can literally help to save a life – such as that of this rescued hen, shown here taking her very first steps outside after a life spent confined to a battery cage.

There are no words.

If you happen to live nearby, Animal Place is also in need of volunteers as well as adoptive homes for some of the birds.

Not in a position to do either? Spread the word!

* Photos by Animal Place’s Marji Beach. I intentionally didn’t include any of the more traumatic ones – and they are super-traumatic, to the point that I can’t so much as think about them without needing to cry-vomit – ’cause I didn’t want to bum y’all out. But you can view all of Marji’s photos on flickr: Turlock Hen Rescue Set.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Dave

Dave the green and black conure!

If you’re looking to adopt a bird in the Kansas City area, you’re in luck! There are two bird rescues, Beak n’ Wings, Inc. and Burge Bird Rescue, which together foster dozens of lovely birds: parakeets, macaws, conures, budgies, and more.

Dave is a conure from Burge Bird Rescue. A lovely dark green color, Dave is one handsome dude. Poor guy can’t fly due to an old injury to one wing. I bet he enjoys hopping around the house though!

Dave
Conure: An adoptable parrot in Grandview, MO
Medium • Adult • Unknown

Dave the Nanday Conure will save you money because he/she never needs his wings trimmed. He can’t fly because he had an old broken wing that didn’t heal properly. He is in perfect feather condition, but sometimes his attitude isn’t so perfect. Like many mature birds, he can get territorial and cage aggressive, so you will have to understand how to work with a bird with a strong personality. Our birds are not available for breeding. Potential adopters must call for an appointment, and must pass a screening interview to ensure that our birds are going to a safe home. Adoption fee $75

More about Dave
Primary colors: Green, Black

If you’d like to welcome a bird or two into your home, please adopt – don’t shop. Feathered friends need our love and compassion, too!
