Since this is the last Find-a-Friend Friday of the year, I decided to go big! Big like a farmed pig! Unfortunately, I had to head all the way over to Springfield, Missouri to find such a nonhuman in need of a home. (I’m guessing that most pigs ’round these parts end up in an abattoir. Cue sad face.) Daphne here is a baby pig who still has a lot of growing to do – but she’ll be a big girl when all is said and done. She enjoys her nomz and reportedly does a cute mealtime jig, much like my little dog friend Rennie. She walks well on a harness and leash, enjoys having her tummy rubbed, and likes to play ball – again, much like a dog. Here’s Castaway Animal Rescue Effort with more:

Daphne
Pig (Farm): An adoptable pig (farm) in Springfield, MO
Large • Young • Female

Kiss a pig? My name is Daphne and I am a real people pig, looking for someone to love! Truly, I’m a pig with a lot of heart. If you have a big heart too, lets get together. I like long walks on my leash and belly rubs. My hobbies are playing with my blue bouncy ball and soaking in a nice cool pool of water. Yummy treats make me talk and beg. I will follow you anyplace. I do enjoy a fine meal, it is a little embarrassing but I get so excited at meal time that I run around and act silly, jumping and twisting, but what do you expect I am a pig after all. If you are wondering about farm pigs, yes we can be loving pets if you have the room. I want a forever home with someone who thinks outside the box and can see me for the sweet heart that I am. I am just a baby now but I will get big and will need a home with plenty of room for me to grow.

Daphne is at the CARE sanctuary and is available for adoption. If you have any questions about her or are interested in meeting her please email us at: yokosw@aol.com

Pigs are intelligent creatures and make lovely companions, assuming you have the room. If so, please consider welcoming this shiny little soul into your home. She’s every bit as deserving as a cat or dog, dontchaknow!

Bruce
Shepherd/Rottweiler Mix: An adoptable dog in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Adult • Male

Bruce is a very handsome, very smart, affectionate 2 year old Shepherd/Rottie mix. He is eager to please but does need some obedience training and a home without small children. He has shown some signs of food aggression, most likely because he had to defend his food from other dogs prior to arriving at Animal Control. Bruce needs a patient and loving home.

ADOPTION INFORMATION FOR DOGS…

Our dogs have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and dewormed. The adoption fee for males is $57 and for females it is $67. If you live in the city of Kansas City, KS there is an additional $5 fee for a city license.

COME MEET OUR DOGS AT OUR WEEKLY SATELLITE ADOPTION EVENTS!

We have satellite adoption events every Friday and Saturday at the Olathe PetSmart at 119th & Strang Line Road. We usually have a second satellite adoption location on Saturdays, too. Visit our Petfinder home page for more information on this weekend’s events. If you’d like to request that we bring a particular dog to one of the events this weekend send an email to karen@hsgkc.org.

These adoption events are part of of our Ray of Hope partnership with The Humane Society of Greater KC, which has significantly reduced the euthanasia rate in our shelter. For more info on the Ray of Hope program, visit the The Humane Society of Greater KC web site.

More about Bruce
Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • Prefers a home without: young children • Primary colors: Black, Yellow, Tan, Blond or Fawn • Coat length: Short

Petfinder is acting a little wonky today – hopefully because oodles and oodles of people are bombarding the site in hopes of adopting a nonhuman (or two or three) in time for the holidays – so if you have trouble viewing Bruce’s listing, wait a few seconds and try again. (Worked for me!) Or just get in touch with the KCK Animal Control directly. Dog bless!

Find-a-Friend Friday: Clementine and Heather

Sisters Clementine and Heather need a home, asap!

Clementine and Heather are a pair of sisters who were originally adopted from The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City when they were just wee little kittens. Several years and a new baby later, and the two are back at the shelter and once again in need of a home. Here’s what HSGKC has to say about them:

Clementine & Heather
Calico/Domestic Medium Hair-White Mix: An adoptable cat in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Adult • Female

Date of birth: 5/04

11/18/11: Clementine & Heather are sisters who are looking for a home together. Clementine is a beautiful white cat with a medium hair coat. She’s an affectionate girl and she gets along with other cats. Heather is a Calico kitty with a pretty coat and an adorable round face. She is very friendly and curious. Both girls get along with other cats. They are 7 years old.

We’ve posted more photos of Clementine & Heather on their individual Petfinder pages.

Heather and Clementine originally came to us when they were little kittens. At that time they were very sick with an upper respiratory virus and it caused horrible eye infections in the kittens. Heather had to have an eye removed at that time because it was so badly damaged. But she’s had no other upper respiratory or eye problems since she was young. Both of Clementine’s eyes were saved. She occasionally has some eye discharge problems and needs medication when that happens.

Heather and Clementine get along well together. They’ve been together their entire lives so we’d like to find them a home together. They were originally adopted when they were young and returned recently due to a new baby in the family and not enough time to care for them.

Please consider opening your heart and home to these beautiful girls – both of them! – in their time of need. ‘Tis the season, am I right folks?

Find-a-Friend Friday: Marley

Marley enjoys cuddling with her feline foster sibling!

Marley! What a ginormous, goofy ball of fur! I chose to feature Marley this week because the picture of her spooning with the cat just melted my heart. I mean really, how cute and adorable can one dog be!?! Also, did I mention that one of her legs was amputated when she was just 10 days old? Yup, Marley’s a tripod! She and her mom (I wonder what happened to mom? The rescue group doesn’t say!) were kept as “outdoor dogs” and thus so many everyday experiences are new to Marley: toys. Cats. Human affection. Dog beds. Tiled floors. Wouldn’t it be fun to see it all through Marley’s eyes, and to share in these discoveries with her? Do it! Adopt Marley! Celebrate Christmas together this year!

Marley
Newfoundland Dog: An adoptable dog in Kansas City, MO
Extra Large • Young • Female

Marley is a 2 year old, purebred, spayed female, Newfoundland. She is a very pretty young lady that needs a special home. She has been here for approximately 2 weeks and has shown great progress. Marley will be three years old in March and this is the first time she has ever been on the inside of a house, the first collar, first time with a cat, first time in a crate, and also the first time riding in a vehicle with the exception of riding in a car when she was 10 days old. This is also the first time that Marley has been separated from her mother. She has bonded very strongly with me and does not like for me to be out of her sight. This length of time has already grown longer.

Originally Marley would not step foot inside the house and had to be carried in. Marley is a little unsure of new surfaces to walk on and has some problems with traction on new surfaces. Marley has a special problem of only having 3 legs. Her back leg was amputated when she was just 10 days old and she starts off very cautiously with floors that may be slippery. By the end of the first day she felt secure running on carpet and I placed a throw rug to cover the area of linoleum that was exposed. By the 3rd day she was avoiding the throw rug because it would slip under her feet when she hurried. She was smart enough to figure out to cut the corner sharper to avoid the rug. She is now feeling comfortable enough that she will run across the linoleum but sometimes forgets that she cant turn sharply or stop fast. She has also learned how to use the dog ramp. One of our next projects will be mastering the stairs.

The first week Marley was pretty much in shock by everything new. She would growl at my dogs, growled at my boyfriend and didnt want anything close to me. And yes, she even growled at the cat. I was very concerned about this behavior at first until we finally figured out that she was resource guarding. Since that time Marley has been settling in and adjusting pretty quickly. Right now she will run between my dogs outside and not make a peep. Yesterday she met my son and two granddaughters. She barked appropriately at strangers coming into the house and as soon as they talked to her she flipped over in her crate and started crying for attention. Shes been great with the girls here and they are 7 and 10 years old. She has also adopted the cat as her pet. One of her favorite things to do is to lie down on the deck and cuddle with the cat.

Marley still does not care for my dogs to approach me inside of the house, but that is only if I am staying in one spot. When I am walking through the house she mixes right in with my two Newfs. She also loves to lay down by my feet wherever I am at in the house. She just wants to be close to me.

Marley previously lived her life in an outdoor pen with her mother. She was let out of the pen at times to run loose in the yard. She has never had much of the personal human attention that she craves so much. Marley does not know how to play with toys but is starting to learn that as well.

She has some areas of hair that are shorter now since the big mats have been shaved off. She has also been spayed, de-wormed and up to date on shots. She also sleeps quietly in the crate in the bedroom all night. We are still working at potty training and she tries really hard to do all of her duties when outside. With the length of time I am gone at work she still has an occasional potty accident in the crate.

Marley is spayed, vaccinated and current on heartworm medication.

Our adoption fee is $250.00. A fenced yard with a minimum height of 4-feet is required for adoption.

If you plan on submitting an application and you are out of our region, once your application is approved we require that you come to our area to meet the dog and foster family. If that goes well you will be able to take your Newfie home with you.

To request a application or contact us with any questions please use the email link below.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Peaches (Also: Wayside Waifs’s “All I Want For Christmas Is YOU!” Adoption Event!)

Peaches!

Meet Peaches, y’all! Isn’t she adorable? She and another little cutie, Marmalade, were rescued from a hoarding situation after the death of their person. Both kittens need a new home to call their own. Hopefully some kickass human will adopt them both. (In time for Christmas! And shower them with gifts come December 25th! And love and hug and cuddle them forever!)

Here’s what SNKC has to say about Peaches:

Peaches
Domestic Short Hair: An adoptable cat in Kansas City, MO
Small • Young • Female

Peaches is in foster care and rescued from a horrible hoarding situation. There were over 30+ cats rescued from this situation and had been left in a trailer for weeks after their owner passed away. Peaches is one of the cuddliest cats I have ever met. She loves to rub and be stroked. She will lay with you and sit with you. She liked to follow us from room to room. She is less than a year old and likely to be a small cat when full-grown. She gets along well with other cats and small dogs, probably any dog, but all we have are small ones. She has not bothered plants in the house and uses the litter box well. If you are interested in adopting Marmalade please email spayandneuterkc@aol.com

Spay & Neuter Kansas City is an awesome group that provides low-cost spay & neuter and vaccination services in the KC area. The also provide education and outreach services, run low-cost dog training classes, maintain a “pet” food pantry, and help find homes for animals in need. Currently they’re in need of in-kind donations (such as dog and cat food, hay, litter boxes, dog houses, and cleaning products), as well as donations of money (or perhaps services?) to repair their outreach truck. Every little bit helps!

You should also know that Wayside Waifs is holding a special “All I Want For Christmas Is YOU!” Adoption Event this Saturday, December 3rd (that’s tomorrow, folks!) from 10AM to 6PM. Stop by and meet the 300+ plus nonhumans who need a kind-hearted soul (that’s you) to bring them in from the cold this holiday season.

All adoptions are just $25! Second chances, is there any gift greater?
