Lucky once, hopefully twice!

Lucky needs your help! This sweet pittie girl’s human can no longer care for her due to health problems – and if someone awesome doesn’t come to Lucky’s rescue asap, she may wind up in the Kansas City Animal Shelter, a high-kill facility where her chances look grim. Please help if you can, and no matter where you live; though Lucky and her man are located in KCMO, transport out of the area is a possibility.

COMPASSION CASE: KCMO Pittie Mix (named LUCKY) and her KCMO Gentleman Need You!

Lucky is a healthy 4 year-old Pittie Mix who needs rehoming ASAP due to her owner’s medical condition. She weighs about 50 lbs. and is Heartworm Negative.

Lucky was rescued from running in traffic a few years ago by her current owner. She was found near a park, was very hungry to the point of being just skin and bones, and had chewed her own tail out of frustration until it was bleeding.

Lucky would LOVE to be the only 4-legged resident in her next home, but is also good with other male dogs and select females. She has also successfully lived with a cat. Lucky is a very sweet girl who will wag her tail all day long when she’s happy, loves rolling up in a blanket and playing hide and seek, and relaxing on the couch if one is available. She is crate trained as well, and appreciates her crate as a safe haven.

Please help Lucky’s people successfully rehome her or place her with a reputable rescue group ASAP. Her kind-hearted owner loves her tremendously: He just absolutely cannot keep her and unfortunately will need to take her to the Kansas City Animal Shelter (high-kill) if we do not step up to help. Transportation out of the Kansas City area can very likely be arranged upon request.

This little bowl of delightfulness is named Blair, and she’s available for adoption through the Humane Society of Missouri. (I know, I had to travel all the way to Chesterfield, MO to find a rescue group that showcases their dogs in silly outfits. The injustice of it all!) She’s a nine-year-old Welsh Corgi and you should totally adopt her ’cause she’s been at the shelter since August and that’s entirely too long. For serious!

So help these ladies out, mkay? If not by adopting, then by sharing.

A Garlicky “Nooch” Cheese Pizza with red sauce, mixed veggies and lima beans.

Nutritional yeast cheese: unlike processed vegan cheeses, it’s cheap, widely available, and easy to make yourself! You can find “nooch” at most natural or health food stores (hint: look in the bulk foods section!), or order by the pound online. Add some water and seasonings and – voilà! – cheese sauce.

Lately Shane has been experimenting with different flavor combos; this is first of many concoctions. Okay, so maybe it does look like a cauliflower with a yeast infection (or alternately play dough play food) – but it tastes like cheesy pizza perfection!

Garlicky “Nooch” Cheese Pizza

Ingredients

…for a Fluffy White Pizza Crust

1 cup warm water (110 degrees F / 45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon sugar
2 1/4 tablespoons active dry yeast
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

…for the Nutritional Yeast Cheese Sauce

2 cups water
2 cups nutritional yeast
4 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons flour
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon minced garlic
4 tablespoons water
2 tablespoon canola oil

…for the pizza

Cornmeal or cooking spray with which to coat the pizza stone or pizza pan

The toppings of your choice: red sauce, vegan meats, nuts, seeds, fruits and/or veggies

Directions

1. To prepare the dough: stir the water, sugar and yeast together until dissolved. Add the olive oil and salt, as well as any extra spices or seasonings. Stir in the flour until blended. Form the dough into a small ball and let rest in large bowl, covered loosely with a towel, anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.

2. When you’re ready to assemble and bake your pizza, preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.

3. As the oven’s heating, make the nutritional yeast sauce: combine all but the last two ingredients (4 tablespoons water and 2 tablespoons canola oil) in a blender and process until smooth and creamy. Pour into a small saucepan and heat on medium until the sauce starts to thicken. Continue to stir constantly. Once it starts bubbling, let it go for 30 seconds, and then remove from the heat. Add the rest of the water and the canola oil and whisk well. Set aside.

4. Assemble the pizza! Spread a dusting of cornmeal onto your pizza stone (or lightly coat your pizza pan with cooking spray). Using fingers dipped in olive oil (optional), pat the dough onto the stone, spreading it out evenly.

5. When you’re done shaping the dough, add your toppings: start with the red sauce, followed by the nooch cheese and any other toppings you want. Set any extra nutritional yeast cheese aside for dipping.

6. Bake at 425 degrees, for between 15 and 20 minutes for a single pizza, or 30 to 40 minutes for two pizzas. Enjoy warm!

Optional: To make a “yellow” pizza (like a white pizza, but more colorful!), simply omit the red sauce!

Stan the Man!

Wayside Waifs – like so many other shelters across the country – is currently filled with dozens of awesome cats and kittens in need of homes (160 at least count!). Newborns like the adorably named Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca (siblings, I’m guessing?), or Daffy and Daisy Duck; distinguished older cats including Lola and Morgan; longer-term residents, like October; and special “special needs” felines, such as Stan the Man here!

Stan’s requirements aren’t all that extraordinary, actually; the little guy is just short one eye and needs you to look past that, mkay? Don’t think of him as different – at least not in a negative way; think of him as unique! The most adorable pirate you’ve ever seen!

Stan the Man here! Just like Stan Musial I’m an all star, widely considered to be one of the all time greatest snugglers of all time. I’ve compiled 3,630 purrs (the most in a career spent with only one team) 475 home runs for watching sporting events with my family, and was named the Most Valuable Pussycat by all my roommates, I’d still be living there but the landlord in our new place allows only two pets and the dogs got to stay. I lived with only one family my whole life and I’m sad I had to go, but I just know I’ll find another family just as terrific. If you’re looking for a Hall of Fame Feline Friend, I’m your man!

You may have noticed I have only one eye. Kind of makes me look kind of rakish, like a pirate, I’m thinking Johnny Depp. Boy, is he hot! I hear the ladies really go for him. They go for me too! I have lots of fans here in the staff and volunteers at Wayside. I’m a people person and love to hang out with you, but do okay with small dogs. I lived with two small dogs for many years but I’m not good with big dogs as I’d been attacked by them in my past. Please don’t take me if you have a big dog. I’m very afraid. I shouldn’t go outside. I can’t defend myself well because I can’t see what’s coming on one side.

Inside I do great! I love to climb and my favorite place to perch is high up on the furniture. I respond well to my name, so please don’t change it when we go home. I’ve lost my people, my home and my dog brothers, so my name is all I have left that’s familiar and comfortable. I need something to hold on to, please. I’ve lived with a family the last 8 years so I’m having a little trouble adjusting to shelter life. I’m a bit shy and not as outgoing and friendly as I’d be with people I know and love. When we go home, I might go hide under a bed or in a closet until I feel comfortable joining the family. I’m affectionate and want to be buddies, but I’ll need a bit of time to adjust.

My family says I enjoy running water so if I can please have a kitty fountain or stick my head under the sink when you’re brushing your teeth or doing dishes sometimes, I’d like that. I have great hygiene habits and never have a litter box issue if you keep it clean for me. I eat dry food but shouldn’t have only dry food as it’s hard on my tummy. I need some wet food too. Thank you so much for honoring my requests. And don’t forget in these tough economic times, I’m a bargain, just $25 for a lifetime of friendship and affection. Such a deal I have for you!

I’m looking forward to joining your team and being your MVP. I’ll be at batting practice faithfully learning to swat my toy mice way, way out there… going going gone! Holy cow! See you around the ball park.
