Find-a-Friend Friday: Daphne

Since this is the last Find-a-Friend Friday of the year, I decided to go big! Big like a farmed pig! Unfortunately, I had to head all the way over to Springfield, Missouri to find such a nonhuman in need of a home. (I’m guessing that most pigs ’round these parts end up in an abattoir. Cue sad face.) Daphne here is a baby pig who still has a lot of growing to do – but she’ll be a big girl when all is said and done. She enjoys her nomz and reportedly does a cute mealtime jig, much like my little dog friend Rennie. She walks well on a harness and leash, enjoys having her tummy rubbed, and likes to play ball – again, much like a dog. Here’s Castaway Animal Rescue Effort with more:

Daphne
Pig (Farm): An adoptable pig (farm) in Springfield, MO
Large • Young • Female

Kiss a pig? My name is Daphne and I am a real people pig, looking for someone to love! Truly, I’m a pig with a lot of heart. If you have a big heart too, lets get together. I like long walks on my leash and belly rubs. My hobbies are playing with my blue bouncy ball and soaking in a nice cool pool of water. Yummy treats make me talk and beg. I will follow you anyplace. I do enjoy a fine meal, it is a little embarrassing but I get so excited at meal time that I run around and act silly, jumping and twisting, but what do you expect I am a pig after all. If you are wondering about farm pigs, yes we can be loving pets if you have the room. I want a forever home with someone who thinks outside the box and can see me for the sweet heart that I am. I am just a baby now but I will get big and will need a home with plenty of room for me to grow.

Daphne is at the CARE sanctuary and is available for adoption. If you have any questions about her or are interested in meeting her please email us at: yokosw@aol.com

Pigs are intelligent creatures and make lovely companions, assuming you have the room. If so, please consider welcoming this shiny little soul into your home. She’s every bit as deserving as a cat or dog, dontchaknow!

Recipe: Extra-Easy Vegan Bisquick Cheese Pizza

December 29th, 2011 4:59 pm by Kelly

2011-12-17 - Basic Bisquick Pizza - 0002

Aside from using store-bought bread, this Bisquick pizza crust is about as easy as it gets! Because it doesn’t contain any yeast, you don’t need to let the dough rise at all. (Pizza in a pinch, anyone?!?) It also makes for a pretty foolproof thin crust recipe – what you see is what you get!

Taste-wise, a Bisquick crust is a bit different from a more traditional, yeast-based concoction. When cooked, the crust has a flaky texture, similar to a biscuit (if a little denser). Though the original recipe doesn’t call for it, I added a teaspoon of garlic powder, hoping to mimic the taste of these Cheddar Cheesy Garlic Biscuits (also Bisquick-based) I made for veganmofo. The garlic powder helped, but more spices would definitely be a plus! Maybe next time I’ll try oregano and parsley as well? Of course, you can’t go wrong with a cheesy, cheddar Daiya-laced crust either. Decisions, decisions!

Quick and yummy, and super-useful for those nights when you’re craving pizza but are in too of much of a hurry to make a proper dough. Definitely a keeper!

Extra-Easy Vegan Bisquick Cheese Pizza

(Based on this recipe from Betty Crocker.)

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups Bisquick mix
1/3 cup very hot water + extra as needed
1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

The toppings of your choice; we used:
Red sauce
A 50/50 blend of Follow Your Heart and Daiya mozzarella cheeses
Oregano

Cooking spray (e.g. Pam) or cornmeal

Directions

1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F. Grease a 12- to 14-inch pizza pan, or lightly coat a similarly sized pizza stone with cornmeal. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the Bisquick, garlic powder, and hot water and mix well, until a soft dough forms.

2. Press the dough into the pizza pan, using your hands to pat it down evenly. If using a pizza stone, roll the dough out using a rolling pin; add a dash of flour to prevent it from sticking.

3. Add your toppings and bake at 450 degrees F for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese, hot and bubbly. Serve warm!

Bruce
Shepherd/Rottweiler Mix: An adoptable dog in Kansas City, KS
Medium • Adult • Male

Bruce is a very handsome, very smart, affectionate 2 year old Shepherd/Rottie mix. He is eager to please but does need some obedience training and a home without small children. He has shown some signs of food aggression, most likely because he had to defend his food from other dogs prior to arriving at Animal Control. Bruce needs a patient and loving home.

ADOPTION INFORMATION FOR DOGS…

Our dogs have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and dewormed. The adoption fee for males is $57 and for females it is $67. If you live in the city of Kansas City, KS there is an additional $5 fee for a city license.

COME MEET OUR DOGS AT OUR WEEKLY SATELLITE ADOPTION EVENTS!

We have satellite adoption events every Friday and Saturday at the Olathe PetSmart at 119th & Strang Line Road. We usually have a second satellite adoption location on Saturdays, too. Visit our Petfinder home page for more information on this weekend’s events. If you’d like to request that we bring a particular dog to one of the events this weekend send an email to karen@hsgkc.org.

These adoption events are part of of our Ray of Hope partnership with The Humane Society of Greater KC, which has significantly reduced the euthanasia rate in our shelter. For more info on the Ray of Hope program, visit the The Humane Society of Greater KC web site.

More about Bruce
Spayed/Neutered • Up-to-date with routine shots • Prefers a home without: young children • Primary colors: Black, Yellow, Tan, Blond or Fawn • Coat length: Short

Petfinder is acting a little wonky today – hopefully because oodles and oodles of people are bombarding the site in hopes of adopting a nonhuman (or two or three) in time for the holidays – so if you have trouble viewing Bruce’s listing, wait a few seconds and try again. (Worked for me!) Or just get in touch with the KCK Animal Control directly. Dog bless!
