Saturday Garbage Plate: The Only To Do List That Matters!

2011-04-12 - Pizza To-Do List 01

Make pizza, photograph pizza, eat pizza, blog pizza, repeat. (THE STORY OF MY LIFE, YO!) Sunday through Saturday, we’ve got a recipe to inspire you. Put these pies on your to do list and eat ’em!

Contests & recipes! Mercy for Animals has a free copy of Kathy Freston’s Veganist up for grabs; Experience Life has a dozen copies of Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Diet; and you can snag a Mediterranean Bread Dipping Set at The Hungry Vegan. Finally, as part of its Vegan Bucket List giveaway series, VegNews is offering up one-year membership to Spork Online to a lucky reader.

Speaking of (ahem!) VegNews, perhaps you’ve heard about the latest controversy to rock the vegan community? This week the vegan blog QuarryGirl revealed that VegNews routinely uses stock photos in both its magazine and on its website – including photos of dishes containing dairy, eggs and meat, sometimes doctored to appear vegan. (In the most egregious example, animal bones were Photoshopped out of a photo of BBQ ribs.) Understandably, many vegans and/or foodies are pissed and offended, myself included; if I hadn’t already decided to let my subscription lapse, this kerfuffle – and VegNews’ lackluster response – might have led me to cancel it. But since I only have one issue left, the point is kind of moot.

Anyhow, I won’t get into it further – mostly because everything I have to say has already been said (and in LOL cat form, to boot) – but. I would like to take the opportunity to point you to this wonderful piece by Katrina Fox of The Scavenger: VegNews controversy offers creative opportunities, with a special emphasis on the suggestions for positive change.

So, to people who create vegan dishes or eat out at vegan restaurants: Take photos of vegan dishes, upload them to Flickr, drop an email to VegNews and other vegan publications offering your photos.

To photographers (vegan or otherwise): Ditto above.

To VegNews editors (and other vegan magazines): Post information on your website about specs for photographs: what you need to be able to include a good photograph of print quality. Put a callout to your readers, to photographers (vegan or otherwise) to take pics of vegan food.

Vegans are fantastic at galvanising into action. So, let’s flood Flickr with images of delicious vegan food.

Let’s make sure that vegan publications no longer need to use stock images of meat, dairy and egg dishes.

Let’s take this unfortunate incident and turn it into an opportunity that will benefit everyone – most of all the animals we seek to protect from suffering.

How about it, vegans? If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s food! Making food, eating food, discussing food, fantasizing about food. AND TAKING AND SHARING PICTURES OF IT ALL! Hey, I’ll start! Here’s my food (not-)porn collection on Flickr, with a set each dedicated to human food, dog food, and – the most important food group of them all – PIZZA! Yum, I’m getting hungry just typing about it. (What did I say about us vegans, hmmmm?)

Hey, pro-choice Missouri! NARAL is holding a lobby day in Jefferson City on Tuesday, May 3. Here are the deets:

Last week, your Missouri House spent hours debating and passing HB28, which allows any pharmacy to refuse to sell emergency contraception. It also places new restrictions on medical abortion – as if we didn’t have enough already!

Contrary to all reason and scientific evidence, the House declared that emergency contraception causes abortion, and therefore, pharmacies can refuse to provide this type of birth control if they don’t want to. Clearly, the Missouri House has little respect for women. They have decided that women can’t think for themselves and that endangering women’s health is OK in the service of “pro-life” politics.

Seriously, could they be any more offensive?

This is your last chance to tell lawmakers in person that they have it all wrong. We need your voice in Jefferson City on Tuesday, May 3. Your representatives need to know that women can and do think for themselves, that pharmacists should dispense prescriptions, not moral judgments, and that women’s health is more important than political posturing.

Will you please join us, along with our coalition partners Planned Parenthood and Faith Aloud, for our final lobby day of the year?

What: NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Lobby Day
When: Tuesday, May 3 from 10:00 – 2:30p.m.
Where: Missouri Capitol, Jefferson City, MO
(Free bus available from St. Louis!)

Please RSVP as soon as possible! Give us a call (314.531.8616) or send us an email at info@prochoicemissouri.org

Psst: We need Lobby Team Leaders too! Let us know if you’re interested!

Be there if you can! AND TAKE SOME VEGAN PIZZA ROLLS TO SHARE!
