Find-a-Friend Friday: Ali

November 12th, 2010 11:18 am by Kelly

Ali is a black, tan and white basset hound/dachshund mix – though her short, thick legs, long body, droopy ears and large head give her that classic wiener dog look.

I combed through dozens of Petfinder listings this morning, looking for THE perfect dog to introduce y’all to. Problem is, they’re all perfect! Every animal is special and unique in her own way, and the many canines whose stories I pored over today are no exception. Finally I settled on dear Ali, for no reason other than that she reminds me of my own dachshund friend Ralphie, who underwent surgery to remove his right eye yesterday (melanoma; we’ll know next week whether it was malignant) and is recovering on my lap as we speak. Point being, Ali is just one of thousands of wonderful, loving individuals in need of a home at this very moment. If you’re looking to welcome a new nonhuman friend into your family, please consider adopting – rescuing – one of these many Friends in need.

Okay, so. On to Ali, who is currently staying with Animals Best Friends in Independence, MO. Here’s what he foster peeps have to say about this lovely lady:

I know that look! Miss Ali is about to stir up some trouble.

This cuddle bug is Ali. She was born in 2006. She LOVES attention and to be loved on as much as you are willing to give her. She does great with other dogs and loves to sniff and play outside whenever she has the chance to… She is crate and house trained as well. She would make a great companion for someone. She is looking for that furever home. Please open your hearts and your home to this pretty girl.

If you are interested in meeting Ali, please go to WWW.ANIMALSBESTFRIENDS.ORG and fill out an application. If you are interested in possibly fostering ANY of our WONDERFUL pets, please go to our website listed above, and go to the tab “HOW TO HELP” and fill out a foster application and someone will get in contact with you! 🙂 Thank you very much for taking the time to check out our kids!!

Saturday Garbage Plate: It’s Vegan MoFo, yo!

In honor of Vegan MoFo – the Vegan Month of Food, for all you rubes who have not been paying attention – our daily #nomz on Twitter is all #veganmofo, all month. Also: there are only so many vegan pizza recipes to go around.

Because I’ve had my hands full with mofo blogging, I don’t really have anything else to share with y’all this week. There are some pretty awesome contests and giveaways happening this month for VMF; I included a brief roundup as part of yesterday’s Friday Food post over at my other place, but for a complete list, check out the official thread at the PPK.

Also, have you heard about the Cooks Source kerfuffle? No? Background here; do follow the hilarity on Facebook and Twitter, if you can.

Nerd rage, ’tis a force to be reckoned with. Just ask Judith Griggs, she’ll tell you – and then charge you $130 for the privilege.

Find-a-Friend Friday: Simon

November 5th, 2010 10:33 am by Kelly

Simon is a small, furry, black and white pig(let) with a large, round pink nose. Look up the word “adorable” in a dictionary, and there Simon will be, smiling right back at you!
Photos courtesy Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

We’re mixing things up this week with a potbellied pig Friend instead of the usual dog or cat! I enjoy featuring less traditional “pet” animals – particularly farmed animals such as cows, pigs and chickens – but rarely have the chance; animals belonging to these species are more likely to be killed and eaten than adopted and loved, especially here in the midwest, and thus there are very few “food” animals available for adoption ’round these parts. (Holy run-on sentence, Catwoman!)

All of which is precisely why dear Simon lives not in Kansas or Missouri, but Iowa. Still, it’s a short distance to drive in exchange for all this cuteness!

Simon is a fun, friendly 6-month-old pig who loves attention and playtime. He is potty trained and responds to come, stay and stand. He needs a home with no children under 7 and no large dogs. Adopters MUST be experienced with potbellied pigs — no exceptions.

Simon will be a smaller pig, so he will need to either be an indoor pig or have a heated enclosure available to him.

Simon will remain in his foster home until he is adopted. If you are interested in learning more about him or setting up an appointment to meet him, contact Laura at (515) 473-9105 or at medical [at] arl-iowa.org.

As always, thank you for adopting!
